Someone asked me to do a backup of their laptop.

It's a Pentium 1 with Windows 98. It's connected to the computer with an old lap link cable and the connection is fine, but what do I use to transfer the files? PC Anywhere doesn't work on XP (it's an old copy).

Any ideas? Thanks!

Laplink .. the software?? There was an old DOS version.. I never remember paying for it, but the newer product you look like you have to pay for:

http://www.laplink.com/llv/

System Requirements

* IBM PC/XT/AT, PS/2 or 100% compatible
* 470K available RAM (520K recommended)
* PC-DOS or MS-DOS 3.1 or higher, or DR DOS 5 or 6

You should be able to find it for free on all the usual suspects.

the usuall suspects,why dont you just come out and say it.chicken pick pick.
seriously there is a easy way,just take the hardrive out,and put it in another pc
then use burning software to burn back up images or,what ever you prefer

Thanks all.

I would do that, but the hard drive from this old laptop ain't fitting in my computer ;)

I do this for people often, I usually put a network card in and do it that way :rolleyes:

I think it would be against forum rules if I mentioned http://www.thepiratebay.org , so I wont recommend it :)

Probably ;) :p good one Mark, one more thing though, won't it be better to just use lap link and avoid all the nasty opening and closing?

I wouldn't do it, that's just my opinion

Don't waste you're time trying to connect to the computer. Whip out the HDD and stick it in a USB 2.0 2.5" external case. It's the easiest way of doing it.

Then just drag the files you want to back up.

Those cases are cheap R150 - 200, plus you can use it to make yourself a nifty external HDD.

Yep did the same with a laptop hd last week when xp got totally buggered up. Took out the HD of the usb external case and swopped it with the laptops HD and voila an hour later I backup all the stuff I needed to save

Does the laptop have a USB port? Then you can just stick your external HDD in there and copy the stuff that way. But you'll need the drivers for your external casing on '98.
