Pentium D 805 Dual Core

Especially not from a 800 series PD, those things generate enough heat to turn the coming winter into summer, the 900 series is much cooler.

For the price of 1 3800+ X2 i can get:
Pentium D 805
1GB DDR2 533
Asus Motherboard

Looks like a winner to me!!

All that for R2400?

Anyway, what are you planning on doing with that PC then?

And you better overclock that sucker or else THIS will happen.

Of course, the X2 3800+ thrashes the Pentium D 820 in benchmarks, and the 830 and even 840 a lot of the time too. And that's not when overclocked...

the whole point of this thread was to prove that intel are becomming better value for money. Why would anyone buy a celeron now, if they can get a meaty 805??

The 805 is not a dual core compeditor!!!

I have seen some info to the contrary. The 805 runs even cooler than a 920 due to the slower FSB.

The 805 wont have any impact on the existing dual-core processors and the price is nowhere in their ballpark. So stop comparing it to the 3800+ and 920. The REAL competition is from the similar priced Single-Cores. The A64 3200, P4 3.0Ghz and the Celeron 3.2Ghz. It's obvious, there is no competition. The 805 will beat the pants off any of those Processors.

Its wont beat the pants of anything and everything. A 3200+ will still be faster in games, especially those that are more CPU dependent (HL2) while 805 might benefit from multithreaded new games that come out. Encoding also wouldn't be a lot faster than a 3200+, except if you have multithreaded encoders, it will aid smooth multitasking, say encoding and surfing.

If overclocked, you use the fsb to increase the speed, a 905 would have been the best, I would even buy one and overclock it without worrying about thermal throtling.

And I never compared it too a 920 or x2 3800+ except for the temperature range, with the intention of its overclockability.

The current Intel Dual cores are crap according to the reviews, at any price. Cheap crap is still crap.

please find a review for me that says the 805 is crap

all i can find is of how good value they are and how they can be overclocked to 3.7Ghz

I based my opinion on reviews like: http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/21/the_mother_of_all_cpu_charts_2005/
which is maybe not completely fair.

Note, they do not specifically talk about the 805, so maybe the 805 is also an exception from the 800 series in general. Also, overclocking is a gamble, so if you are unlucky, you might not get any extra speed from your CPU and you will not be able to return it for that. I would personally not consider overclocking potention a deciding factor when buying a CPU. I prefer my PC not to crash in the middle of a game etc. or spend R1000 on extra cooling after saving R500 on the CPU itself.

Fair enough :)

probably true for several of the games (especially those from the "low quality" producers who only care about how quickly they can make money out of a game, *Cough*EA.Gam*s*Cough*)

But not for encoding apps, most of the encoding apps have multithreading now. personally I use Nero 7 to do all the Audio/Video related encodings. I know pinnacle studio and even Cyberlink software has it now.

Dont forget about you evil antivirus, chewing away at the clock cycles, causing stuttering in your games and programs. Yes you might lose 5-10% in framerates (if you switch your Antivirus off), but you will gain in every other aspect. Dual Core owners will understand exactly what i am going on about.

And no, I am not an Intel or an AMD fan, I own X2 4400+ and am recommending a Pentium D 805 for everybody who is looking @ about R1200 for a CPU. If you have R2200, get a X2 3800. If you got R500, get a Sempron S754 2600+.
