Performance Problems with my 56k Modem???

Hey guys,

I've been having this problem for quite a while now and you may actually find other posts on it on this site...

But anyway, I've been having some performance issues with my 56k modem.

It used to connect perfectly fine at a speed of 45.2Kbps
Suddenly now it will only connect at 28Kbps or somewhere in the 30Kbps range if i'm lucky.

I have had my line checked twice by telkom techies and its still the same. I'm actually now wondering if it isn't my modem itself or the ISP (iafrica which is now owned by Mweb).

If anyone has any ideas or solutions it would really be much appreciated.

I have ordered my ADSL line and just waiting for it to be installed, i really don't want this speed issue to carry through to that either.

Try calling the ISp and ask if they can please resolve the issue. I read somewhere that they sometimes make the speeds slower and then when you phone in, they tell you it's nothing, then afterwards the speeds are perfectly fine.

To be absolutely sure, borrow someone elses dial up codes and see if it connects at normal speeds. If it does, then it's the ISP and if it doesn't then it's the modem.

Dial up is already slow at full speed and you getting just more than half the speed that dialup offers... I feel your pain

Well, i do plan to throw it away as soon as my ADSL gets installed....

Hell i plan to break the 56k modem into bits, set it alight and watch the piece of s**t burn

I had the same problem, telkom splits ure line in a diffrent wave form so that they can give ure line to someone else too if they run out of lines and that will cause the line to connect at 28Kbps, my line only connected ay 14kbs mine was shared with 4 people, telkom has a system that allows them to do it and no you cant demand telkom to fix it as it is a voice line and not a data line, as long as you can talk on the line there is no issue and telkom wont care so the only way out is adsl where telkom will have to installl ure own line to sort out the issue, Good luck and may the force be with You!!!!

take some wire, wire it onto key points of the modem - plug it into 220 and you will definatley get a good BANG out if it.

or even better...

strip some phone cable, wire the phone cable into a 15amp plug. Build up a useless old pc with ALL its components necessary to work, make sure the pc is running, and the modem is on, stand clear and plug in the telephone cable into 15A power outlet... Oh and do this all on a night of BAD lightning, and Make sure you're up to date and loved by your insurance company

Hi Pepercorns. Try this if you are a windows user.
Once you have dialed up go
start>run>type "cmd" hit enter
then type tracrt 196.7.0.138
Cntrl +C after the first few hops.
Copy the IP address of the first hop (this should be the IP lof your terminal server or the ip of the answering modem.

Then in your cmd window type
ping -t IPaddress of first hop (ie somthing like ping -t 155.239.147.254

do it for about 100 pings.

you want a nice consistent rate of <180ms or so. If you hjave spikes you have a problem line or some spoyware using your line. Paste your results back here.

The best explanation I've heard so far - makes perfect sense, but if you pay for 56Kbps connection they cannot say that it is for voice only, as they supply the dial-up too... that is if your ISP is Telsuck?
