Hi there

I just got my GPRS to work with Virgin Mobile yesterday. It worked great except for the fact that my connection was dropping every 20 mins or so. Does anyone have any tip for improving/getting around this issue? I'm using my Samsung E860 to connect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Metrognome,

Please verify that your settings are set as below:
Phone Modem Settings:
Dial String: *99# OR *99***X# where X is the digit corresponding to the numerical position of the Virgin Mobile WAP settings on your phone/data card. (e.g. if the settings are listed 4th, the dial string must be *99***4# )
APN name: vdata
Login ID: blank
Login Pass: blank
Initialization String (if required): at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata"
Otherwise, please PM your contact details so that we can go through all the setup, it might also be a weak network signal in your area.
We can ressolve this!

This sounds like a characteristic of the VM connection. If you leave it for a while - say to read a long web page, then to compose a message - it just stops. There is also the need to reconnect on occasion for no discernable reason. It has little to do with settings - which are given to us by Virgin anyway.

Hey guys thanks for the quick feedback!

I'll check my settings at home and confirm, but I have a feeling it's just a general problem that everyone experiences. But you never know!

I live in the Cape Town CBD so I doubt it would be caused be weak signal.
I'll let you all know!

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for brigning this to our attention;
I will have this issue of disconnection after 20 mins investigated. Is there anybody else experiencing the same problem? Please specify as the the nature and times for quick resolution & i will also need your datails to log this with support.
Metrognome, pls check your connection settings as there is an option to disconnect after a certain period on inactivity "idle". This can be customised to individual preferences.

@ndlovu_f: well since you're polling, I too get frequent disconnects on vm. Everything is setup correctly and there is no idle-time disconnect. Some days the connection will stay up for hours, but mostly it last less than half an hour before I have to reconnect. I live in Durbanville, in the Western Cape.

Thank you for the response, much appriciated. This allows us to capture as much details as possible. Pls PM me your mobile number, area & just a brief nature of the problem should you be experiencing the same problem as Sselmrah. I will act on it and give feedback soonest.

ndlovu, we appreciate what you are doing. I just have the feeling we keep going over old ground with little improvement. I've definitely reported this problem several times in the past.

Please will you ensure it get's forwarded in indelible ink this time.
Thanks again.

Hi again

I checked my setting last night and they are indeed correct. The problem seemed a little better last night, with the connection only dropping every 30 mins or so. The connection seems connected but just stops sending and receiving data, and then eventually drops out...

I find that I get fewer problems if I roam on Vodacom with manual network selection.

As an alternative you may want to consider the Advinne EDGE USB modem. The software comes pre-configured with the Virgin Mobile settings.

My VM GPRS connection started doing the exact same thing a couple of days ago. Maybe it is only temporary.

Setting your email to check every 7 min is a good way to keep u live - ISPs are set to boot deadwood, that is why u get proggies that promise to keep u on line

Please post a 'how to' for this. It would help enormously.

If you use mIRC or some other IRC program you could use a command that will ping the server every X seconds by using this command:
/timer 0 X raw ping 8717
0 indicates how many times the command should be run before it is stopped. 0=infinite.
X indicates how many seconds to wait each time (+-30)
the 8717 is just some random number to send to the server.

OR you could run a background ping by using a .bat Batch file.
Download one I for you created here:
http://www.wolfie.za.org/myadsl/keep.bat (1KB)
Run it by double clicking on it. It will ping www.google.co.za every 30 seconds. You can edit this freely. To stop it, just press CTRL+C or quit the command line window.

Enjoy!

Hi There
I use the above wireless modem to connect to a pre-paid VirginMobile account, and a pre-paid MTN account.
The best speed I get on the Virgin is EDGE 284, but it is generally speedy enough for general use. Convenient because the DATA is not too expensive for light use, and offers the convenience of not being bundled- henc no rollover problems.
Biggest pain is the connection dropping every 10 minutes or so - without fail. Sometimes the whole modem needs to be unplugged and replugged before the modem can pick it up again!
It is not the modem, witht the MTN simm it gets 3.6mps (claimed) and is super fast (unless it is between 7.30pm and 9pm ... when it slows down to glacial).
With all of these I use Hauweai's Mobile Partner, or sometimes lately mdma (this allows ussd commands from modem {sometimes}.
Will your ping solution be of use to me - is it compatible with these 'dialers'?
I am not familiar with MIRC.

The BAT file I created is compatible with any type connection yes and I have found it to be of great help with keeping my Virgin Mobile connection alive. But some times not even this will be able to keep it active each and every time.

For interest sake, are you using the E220 USB modem or what exactly? I also had those problems where I had to remove the modem and plug it in again/reset before it would Want to work again :(

Luckily, I have ADSL now :D
