Is it possible to create your own BES for your extended family?

If you have a server with high speed upload, you also will need a dedicated server and then you will need the Enterprise Server software from RIM, not sure if its free.

Remember with BES you internet speed becomes the phones speed, your mobile provider setups essentially a VPN between the phone and the BES server, the moment that server goes down so does the internet connection on all devices.

Even with BES he would need a domain, and setup this home pc as a mail server, as a matter of fact he would need 2 machines, domain registrar requires 2 ip addresses to approve a domain registration/transfer.

Easiest way might be using MWeb's Hosted Exchange. You create a domain name, they give you mailboxes on HE (charge you for the mailbox sizes, but it's not terribly expensive), and BES is included.
