Wonder how it works - meaning the transmission of data... where does the data go? (when you talk etc)

It connects to the cellular provider over the internet. You will need an existing internet connection for this to work properly. So you will pay for your internet usage (e.g. at a hotel), and you pay your cell provider for the call you place/receive. Of course your cell provider has to be able to accept such connections. Given that in some countries internet access is considered part of your room rental, and the cost of roaming calls, this may potentially save you a lot of money.

IT workshop here is in a basement, non-existent CellC signal.

Maybe if I can get something like this just to be able to get SMS'es and calls...

You can also get indoor repeaters. One of my clients had that issue throughout their building, and both MTN and Vodacom installed such repeaters for them. I can now get a full HSDPA signal inside it. No idea what it's called, though. And, AFAIK, it doesn't need a internet connection.

you're supposed to lay your cellphone on it... not your member.

Seriously... some humans think they have to straddle everything.

No man - this thing is going to be transferring a cell phone signal right next to you... I'm not going to be the guinea pig on this one
