I have a startup project and require an integrated service to retrieve customer personal and lookup information.

Given a SA ID I require:

• First, Middle, Last name
• Gender
• Race
• Religion
• Address (not a requirement for now)

Lookup data:

• South African Addresses (Country, Province, City, etc)

Is the a free/ paid for API I can consume?

There's a few services, but they can be costly:

Details depend on the search type, and costs vary. It will be difficult getting address information without doing a credit check, which is expensive. You also need sufficient permission to do a lookup on these kinds of information.

Just a note, you need to be quite careful dealing with personal information,
with the new POPI act in place.
For instance how you store personal information is regulated.

You better wise up on the law around POPIA. I did research on the act for an Honours infosec assignment this year which included interviewing a lawyer. Actually skilling up on data veracity for POPIA compliance as a result of my assignment.

Once the act comes into place, you will have a headache with your clients using your API as you won't be allowed to link data like Religion to an ID number as the data can be used against an individual by the operator (your clients). Then there is the issue of what you store on your servers, including logs files.

This is something your CEO/Manager should organize not you, unless of course you are the owner of your company. The authorization required for such an API otherwise goes above and beyond your pay grade.

If you're doing KYC type work it's not going to be free. There's a sample report on their site, it pulls:
