I know that there are all sorts of grey areas regarding WiFi networks and i had an interesting thought the other day:

If i were to set up a little suitcase with:-
iBurst modem (or 2 or 3) and a little router and a WiFi base station - that is all for arguments sake self-powered.

Then i walk around - to the office, to the airport, to the mall or anywhere else where i am free to walk - and start selling time on my little personal wireless hotspot to collegues and passers by...

As long as i don't cross any roads (or something) telkom cant say anything - but what other laws (if any) would i be breaking or have i found myself a convinient little grey area?? :D

Thats a good idea.. although the self-powered option, its going to be a heavy suitcase with a UPS in it :)

ambo - interesting thought, does Ibursts Terms of Service or contract not say something about reselling bandwidth/connection?

Not that i can see... looked at the fine print on the back of the signup contract as well as flipping through the reseller contract quickly.
Don't really see why they would... I'm paying for the bandwidth, so its mine and i should be able to do with it what i want. Its only in the case of a monopoly (aka Telkom) that they have strange laws and terms restricting you from reselling so that they can protect their market :(
That said - my little suitcase could equally be fitted with MyWireless and 3G modems :D

Still going to be a heavy suitcase to lug around...

Unless you have a minature nuclear reactor from Area51?

Or some other plan?

Than again, it is quite a brilliant idae.

Ok so suppose i snuck the stuff in under my desk at work and plugged it into the wall - appart from the fact that i was "stealing" company electricity - would my boss have anything to hold against me (also suppose no one actually knows i have the equipment there and they buy all the bandwidth through a Credit Card portal...)

Ok, how do you provide the Credit Card portal in your suitcase? :)

suppose there are ways around it, its a fantastic idea... until dome cop thinks the suitcase is a bomb :)
