Peter Martyr is the Group Chief Executive of Norton Rose Group and is based in London.

Prior to becoming Chief Executive in 2002, Peter specialised in dispute resolution and in the course of his professional career has handled a number of large and complex arbitration and litigation cases, including disputes involving sovereign states. Peter has particular expertise in energy, commercial shipping, insurance, commodities and trading disputes. Peter has been involved in a number of high profile cases, including:

  • the collapse of the National Bank of Brunei and the ensuing multi-jurisdictional litigation involving 53 banks;
  • a dispute concerning the forward production of North Sea “J” block gas production and CATS pipeline;
  • conducting the insurance litigation in connection with the collapse of the Maxwell empire;
  • acting for oil majors in relation to rig construction, refinery closure and concession disputes;
  • acting on the world’s largest shipbuilding dispute;
  • acting on a leading case in the Privy Council concerning agency fraud;
  • acting on a dispute with the Government of Greece in the European Court of Human Rights concerning the expropriation of a refinery.

Peter joined the practice in 1977 and became a partner in 1985. He joined the Management Committee in 1996 and was instrumental in introducing the International Business Group structure to the practice. Peter was also responsible for setting up the Norton Rose Charitable Foundation in 2003.

Peter is a member of the Baltic Exchange, the International Bar Association, the City of London Solicitors’ Company, the British Insurance Law Association and the Institute of Directors.

In 2009 Peter won the Legal Business Management Partner of the year award.
