Petition to Move the WorldCup from SA

Hmm, didn't know that.

So there weren't any politicians in the German LOC?
I don't know and I'm not going to bother checking. My posting was in response to Bageloo, I proved my point, and that's all there is to it.

FIFA is happy - I am happy - the LOC ( whether politicians or not )are doing a good job

The 2010 FIFA World Cup™ may still be over three years away, but FIFA General Secretary Dr Urs Linsi has already seen enough from the tournament hosts to be convinced that football's next global showpiece will be a roaring success.
Dr Linsi recently visited South Africa to see for himself how work is progressing, and afterwards he spoke to the South Africa 2010 Organising Committee to reaffirm that preparations for the tournament are well underway and firmly on track.

FIFA.com

As for Government

We have had many meetings in South Africa and have found the people very professional and the support of the South African government to be absolutely outstanding. The promises they've made, they've always kept.

On progress

We are very pleased with what has been achieved in South Africa in the last two months. Progress is really visible. You can look at Soccer City and you do not recognise it any more - it's really impressive. This is a major step forward.

204 entries received for the WC preliminary draw

It shows that the whole football family is behind the World Cup. Even those countries who are unlikely to qualify want to be part of the 2010 World Cup. The expectations are immense. Football is proud to have the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. These are not words, they're facts. No-one can argue with that.

The challenges

The challenges are huge, there's no question about that. The construction of the stadia is the main issue. The reserves of time are tight. We have to move forward, we can't lose time any more. It is important that the process of construction of the stadia has started. We're on track and we're very positive. We know we need to continue like this and FIFA will monitor the progress very closely. We can't afford the process slowing down. We must continue with the same spirit, speed and professional approach for the entire construction period and we are convinced we've taken all the measures and necessary steps to guarantee that we move forward.

Why will it be special

South Africa is on the same level as all other World Cups. The organisation and technique will be the same as in Germany or Korea and Japan. We have to be as professional, but there are so many elements that will make this World Cup unique. The hospitality, warmth and passion of South Africans guarantees that. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will definitely have a South African touch and that's what makes it such a unique event.

I don't care who runs it. I was merely pointing out that politicians are running the show - just making a point really...

The LOC is a temporary body. They don't run football in the country. The politicians need to get involved because money to build stadiums and the infrastructure comes from GVT. That does not mean that the world cup is an ANC vehicle in any way and should never be used to settle political scores. The world cup is for football loving people across the globe...we are just hosting it, it remains a FIFA event.

man some people have sad lives...

I don't know who's worse. The idiots who made the petition or the idiots who are signing it?

Actually I do the idiots who are signing it...

The FIFA world cup is being organised by the LOC, no? The LOC are just a bunch of politicians (one of them in particular quite the fraudster), no? Therefore, logically, the politicians are running the show (currently). The point is this: those members of the LOC who are polticians, remain politicians ahead of anything else. And all politicians - all of them - are in it for themselves.

But enough now. Accept the point and move on.

Oh, and for the record, I don't care whether the WC happens in South Africa or Australia or on the moon. Personally I feel that money may have been better spent on the real problems South Africa faces, but that's my own opinion.

All 351 of them.

"Mr Blatter, we're going to have to move the World Cup. 351 people on the internet want it moved somewhere else."

The point is that your point has no point, it is a statement of undisputed fact, the question was so what ?

as for the money being better spent - this discussion has been held many times on this forum - and without taking it any further myself - I will let FIFA General Secretary, Dr Urs Linsi say it for me

South Africa is a democratic country now. Never has such a young nation been the host of a World Cup. What South Africa has already achieved as a society in 13 years, we can only compliment you. Wherever you go in South Africa the people are so warm and the atmosphere is great. People welcome you with open arms and broad smiles. There is a great flow of energy. It's very special. You really feel as though you're coming home. You can't have better hosts for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. To have the World Cup here, the legacy it will leave afterwards and what the World Cup will do for the South African nation is more than in previous World Cups. Given the priority it has been given by the government, I'm sure this young nation will make great strides after this World Cup.

Ok ya like all thous things dont happen in other countries?
and no person is going to be doing something when there are stacks of ppl every where not to forget that most people will be on a grand stand some where.

My only concern now is that : We have to start building !!!! parties are all good (refer to other threads) but the stadiums need to look good before the teams arrive. no use only having computer 3d models of them.

but i have all faith in SA, world cup here we come.

When the World Cup comes around, we will ALL be sitting around to watch it, soccer lovers or not, because we are a sport fanatic country, (plus its a good excuse NOT to work and to socialise) and South Africans are socialising nutters.
For a few weeks , this country wont be focused on all the bullsh*t of crime, politics and deprevation, which will be a good thing, and people will enjoy themselves.
What i find the saddest though is it is always EX South Africans living abroard, who bring up these sort of posts, but never about where they are staying, only ever about South Africa. Agh Shame!.
As Bwana previously stated, we need a petition against stupid petitions

I agree with you on that one. If all these people feel so strongly about the safety of all the tourists, let them petition to shut down the Tourism industry, and try and stop all visiting teams of ALL the other sporting codes.

Bear in mind that many countries advise their citizens against travel/tourism to SA because of the violent crime problem, so no need for a petition here.
We need to get the crime under control and these countries will lift the advisories against travel to SA.

Rest asured, the crime situation will be assessed and if not considered safe, we'll be in trouble - it's time the government comes clean and sorts their shiit out.

As previously pointed out, the numbers of tourists visiting SA has been steadily increasing over the past few years - and has grown three times more than the international tourism market

During his address at the annual Tourism Indaba on Saturday, CEO of South African Tourism Moeketsi Mosola has reported that South Africa’s tourism grew three times more then global tourism in 2006.

According to Indaba’s website, the event is the largest tourism marketing event on the African calendar and one of the top three ‘must visit’ events of its kind on the global calendar.

In his keynote address, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus Van Schalkwyk said that almost 8.4 million foreign nationals visited South Africa last year. This was easily the highest number of arrivals South Africa has ever experienced, and it represented a 13.9% increase over the previous year (2005). The global average growth was 4.5% over this period.

What I don't understand, is that no matter how many times I point this out, no one seems to understand the fact that the crime rate has not affected tourism and so will not affect the World Cup

The people you are talking about, are those people who ran when the democratic government took over, now they can't stand to see South Africa prosper and so badmouth the country from abroad so as to justify ( in their own minds ) the fact that they left

The World Cup is now just too much for them to handle - poor South Africans living in Australia, treated as second class, all they have is to badmouth SA

Naaah,

Most of us who do understand you haven't bothered to enter the fray and get some mud thrown at us!

But yes you are right, tourism has grown despite the high crime rate. The world cup is happening here in 2010 and it's unstoppable!!

You have to question the motives of people who would want to punish the country from the inside because they want a lower crime rate. SO DO WE ALL!!! But most of use (I hope) want a lower crime rate and positive things to happen to the country as well!!

To all the fools that think we can host a world cup, you have no idea how big this is. Excluding the stadiums in Germany, they had 7 million supporters outside the stadiums looking at the games on big screens! Do we really think that the world cup is just based on having stadiums build? Stadiums is only 10% of the requirements. Try and push 7 million extra people through our airports in a period of one month and then move them around and give them toilets, sleeping place and so on. You have no idea what you are talking about. A simple example: 10 000 japanese rock up at a stadium. All they want to know is where to go to get to their seats. DO YOU THINK WE HAVE 500 JAPANESE INTERPRETERS IN THIS COUNTRY TO HELP THEM!!! Did you know that in accordance with FIFA rules, one lane on the N1 is blocked off for FIFA vehicles only! All I can say is that YOU have no idea how big this event really is.

But the LOC do, and they are putting plans in place, FIFA is happy with the preparations, and they should know what they need don't you think

Now, now, who is the fool here ? yes, that's right - go look in the mirror and say slowly - I must think before I post - I must think before I post - there there it will be allright

You obviously are the fool around here...Why would you need Japaneese interpreters at the stadium? The tickets are presold and numbered-colour-coded according to the gates and stands. You've obviously never attended a live event before...couch potato:D
