Was filling up in Ficksburg at 13:30 today and this attendant just comes around the back of my car & starts pumping petrol, he didnt even come to my window or ask me how much i wanted, He had put in 2.5 litres before i realised & stopped him. Two and a half hours later I was on my way after they drained my tank & cleared something or other in my engine.

I've driven around 150km so far and it seems fine but are there any signs I should look out for?

That wasnt the end of my bad day though, get to Golden Gate just after 5 and hit yet another huge storm with rivers as roads (had about 5 storms during the last 3 days), so i just decided to stay at Golden Gate tonight & hope tomorrow is a better day :(

one of our guys at work went to the garage we always use and they pumped 6lts of diesel into our mitsubishi. they also drained the tank and so far its been ok.

I dont think that way around is that bad, the guy sorting it out was saying that a few litres of diesel in a petrol tank will help clean up. But petrol in a diesel tank will blow the engine

yip i have heard that a bit of diesel in the petrol does something good for the engine and you are right it did almost mess the engine of the mitsubishi up but they managed to sort it out.

So what did you do to the poor guy after you found out what he is doing?

Ja, I think a bit of diesel in petrol will still ignite, maybe ping a bit, but petrol in a diesel will not burn, floods the engine.

I swore at him for a bit, then when he suggested i could have the petrol he had put in for free and he would then put diesel in I swore some more.
Before i left the owner made sure he showed me his disciplinary form

Oh my $2 whore - sometimes I wonder... I would of also gotten something from the owner stating he is aware of the incident - and try and get something saying he accepts any resultant damage.

+1
And those diesel caps have DIESEL written on them don't they?

Ok, if someone can't read then how are they going to perform word recognition?

Ok.. thats kind of irrelevant since clearly everyone on here can read.

бензин

Thats probably closer to what an illiterate petrol attendant sees. (as an example)

Don't you mean дизель?
You've just changed the character set to Cyrillic.

No, that's not what they see. Even a chimp can see that the words are different, and coupled with different colours (and smell) should be enough to distinguish between them.

Language is just little pictures strung together. Context is also relevant, such as STOP on a sign of a particular shape. Taken together, we know what to do, even if we are in another country driving on cheap diesel - like Russia hey?

Yay... you can use your technology and convert the character set to something you understand.

You assume that the garage attendant understands the concept of words (and I don't mean what the words mean, but that "words" actually mean something) and different colours actually mean something different.

You're applying concepts that you've been taught over the years, and just assuming everyone has the same understanding.

No, you don't even have to know that they are words. Call them icons if you like. The pipe from the pump marked DIESEL and coloured 'whatever' goes into the car with the cap marked DIESEL and with the same colour and smell. It doesn't take much thought.

Never underestimate the intelligence of a chimp and beware of overestimating the intelligence of some humans :) Some of the intelligence tests that chimps are able to pass would probably be failed by at least 1% of human beings IMO.
