I put in petrol at a Total service station on the N1 near the Tropic of Capricorn a few weeks back, 1 March 2014 to be precise. I put in 95 unleaded and paid R14.36 per litre. At the time I didn't notice it but now looking through my petrol slips I realized that it's more than I'm currently paying in Gauteng for the same grade of fuel and this is after a price increase on 5 March 2014.

Does anyone know if fuel further north costs more or if I was overcharged? All sources I have been able to find online only show two prices, Coastal and Reef.

Yes there are different zones. I currently pay R13.99 per litre just outside of Cape Town. Filled up in Caledon yesterday and payed R14.12.

Yes it will always be more expensive up there - the coastal price, for example, increases 1 cent for every 10 km from the city - I live 50 km from Durban and pay 5 c more / litre than I do in Durban.

No mistake - that's the price at the Capricorn Toll.

Try filling up in northern Kruger National Park, darn expensive. The most common prices in the media are just the Gauteng and coast ones.
