PfSense: V2.1.5 setup.

Hi guys and gals.

I need some help please.

I would like to setup PfSense on my Home network, but have run into a snag very early on.

Current setup:
ADSL modem/router - TP-Link WD-8970 > Gigabit switch >several devices.
The router also provide wireless access to cell phones, Netbook and laptop(s)

I used an old pc with the following specs to host the PfSense software:
Asrock 775 Dual-915GL motherboard Rev. 1.01
P4 3Ghz cpu
1GB ram - DDR3
AMI BIOS 2.50
Onboard lan = Realtek RTL8100C PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet controller
PCi Network card - Intellinet 10/100/1000 Gigabit - The card seems to be detected as Realtek though.
120Gb ST3120813AS hdd

I installed PfSense via a cd-rom.
I selected all the defaults during installation.
Once installed, the PC does not want to complete the boot process.
The following displays after the reboot that follows the the installation process:

F1 pfsense
F6 PXE
Boot: F1
\

There is a cursor that flashes directly under the backslash and I don't get pass that.

I have tried changing some of the HDD settings in the BIOS.

If I use the cd as a boot cd the software seems to go on and detect the 2 LAN, cards.
I haven't proceeded past that point, as I need the pc to boot from the Hdd.

I have thought about a Bios update, but in general do not like to do it, unless needed.

Help with would be very much appreciated.

Thx.

P.S:
The little I knew about Linux has faded and I can officially classified as Linux newbie.

What happens if you press F1?

I've had some funny issues with HDD where I actually had to install on ANOTHER PC and then transfer the drive over. I'd try and do that if I were you.

The same. It just does not go on.

I will remove the drive and see if I can see anything.
Don't think I have another drive that I can use in this pc, but will look.

Thx for the reply.
:)

Edit:
Removed the drive and tested, but found no errors.
Deleted the volume and placed it back in the pc, using the install cd, but with the same result.
will look out for a different drive to test with.

You missed my point. I'm suggesting that you take that drive and install it in A DIFFERENT PC. You then install PFSense on it and shut down. You then take the drive and install it in the FIREWALL. You then see if you can boot...

EDIT: it installs - I was thinking that it failed the install. Ignore me then.

I can still try your suggestion. Will give it a go tomorrow and try another pc as well.

What type of HDD is it? SATA/IDE?

If it is IDE, set the CD-Rom to slave, and connect it to the same port (primary IDE) as the HDD is on. The HDD must be set to master.

Had an issue like this where a Smoothwall install won't proceed because the HDD was on the primary IDE port and the CD-Rom drive was on the secondary IDE port.

If it is SATA, try a different PC. Or different SATA port on the MB. FWIW try moving the CD-Rom to the next available SATA slot.

Something stirs in my memory, try jumpering the CDROM as slave with the HDD on SATA1.
Thx, will give it a go.

Edit:
Tried it, but no luck.

Edit:
Definitely pc related. I suppose it could be controller related, maybe bios update would help.

I tried the same hdd in another pc and the setup worked.

Will give it a go tomorrow, if possible.

I've got pfsense installed.
I placed my Tp-link router/modem in Bridge mode and disabled DHCP.

I can access my pfsense dashboard.

I can't access my TP Link anymore.

My router shows that it is synced, but I don't have Internet.

I haven't entered my ISP details anywhere.
I assume I do this in pfsense, but haven't figured out where.

Can somebody advise please?

Thx Mike, will check it out. I found a PPPoE setup, but it does not allow me to enter info.

Will check the link.

Thx
:)

I can't get this to connect to the internet.

The LAN side does issue the IP's, but like I said no Internet connection.
Windows troubleshooting says that there is a problem with my router or modem, but I can still dial from the desktop and connect.
I will add a couple of pics. Apologies for the big size, but if I resize it, a lot of quality is lost.

Currently my Tp_Link router is in bridge mode(as it came out of the factory). I just removed the PPPoE connection.
Cable from Router to WAN network card on pfsense box.

Cable from LAN card to switch.

Your WAN connection shouldn't be set up using DHCP, you should set it to PPPoE.

Thank you will try it!

Update:

Thank you very much.
That worked immediately.

Every setup video that I could find showed it as DHCP?

We have to dial a PPPoE connection through our modems

Since the pfsense was installed I have experienced some issues with the consoles in the house.
NAT 3 is now the default for the PS4 and PS3's, instead of NAT 2.

Not sure what my way forward must be.
My first thought was to put my PS3 in DMZ mode, but not sure how to do it with only 2 LAN cards.
Also I ideally would like to put all three consoles in DMZ mode.

I then looked at port forwarding and read about aliases.

So what I have done now is to create an alias called "Consoles" and all Playstations are incorporated.

Could someone just have a look at a port I have forwarded, please?
Am I right in thinking that the port should now be open on all 3 consoles?
Not sure if there is a way to test this?

Once again apologies for the big size, but the quality drops if I re-size it.

As far as I'm aware you cannot forward the same port to three different IPs. What is the purpose of these port forwards?

To open the ports on the various consoles for different games.

Here are ports for GT6, but other games might have different ports and some would share the same ports.

The port numbers for Gran Turismo 6's online racing are listed below. However, depending on your fellow players' network environments, other UDP ports may also be used.

TCP: 80, 443, 5223
UDP: 3478, 3479, 3658
Online play may be adversely affected if these ports are blocked by your router's firewall or by other means. In such cases, you will need to cancel LAN -> WAN (outward) packet filtering on your router.

Currently my connection to online lobbies are rated as "Low" and sound is bad or missing.
When pfsense is not in play, my connection is rated as "Good" or "High" with no sound issues.
Without pfsense connection is NAT 2 and with pfsense the connection is NAT 3.

Would be easier to just enable uPnP.
