Years ago. Best options is probably in order: Pfsense. Sophos. Untangle.

You did not mention OPNsense. I've used Untangle at home al my life. Downloading OPNsense now to test.

We've moved from OPNsense to pfSense and haven't looked back but make sure your CPU supports AES-NI.

For the past few years I've been using pfSense in a VM on a little HP Microserver. Two WAN connections.
Last month I finally upgraded to a dinkum pfSense box, the Netgate SG-3100.

I got a little pfsense appliance off ebay. So much more convenient than building your own and possibly cheaper depending on how many ports you need.

How many network ports you need?
Round about 4, 2 x wan, 1 x lan and 1 x dmz

I'm using a asrock j3455 motherboard with 4 port intel nic an two realtek nics for my internet an network.
I'm isolating my wifi on the realtek nics an the lan on the intel nic, it works well and the cpu support AES-NI.
So its not to bad plus the cpu never goes higher than 40°C, eventhou im running squid.
