WTF happened to the radio commentary? I finally managed to get onto the stream and instead they're playing some BS music from the 80s.

I know I am wondering myself, one of the biggest series in a while and we get a palooka at the end of a crackling telephone line wtf

in true sabc style,
there appears to be no explanation why they don't bring the game live.
they just cross to the ground from a bad line at some intervals...

Sent a an email to Cricket SA, couldn't be bovvered with the SABC. But this is just low, I mean...they're supposed to be the public broadcaster- how do they explain not broadcasting the cricket?...It surely can't be money...I mean, cricket has a captive audience and lots of people can't sit in front of a tv the whole- not to mention guys like me who aren't in the country.

I heard a rumour that the new station manager at R2000 wasn't a big cricket fan.

I have sent them a polite email, but no response yet.

I was at the cricket (please don't hate me :D). I like to listen to the radio commentary whilst watching live games...it drums out the drunks who scream at every bloody thing. Anyway, I think they had "technical" problems, in the morning the commentator would say things like "we'll bring you ball-by-ball commentary hopefully soon..." then after lunch they stopped using that line. **sigh**

The ball-by-ball commentary is sponsored and there are commercials for it...so I think someone is going to get an earful at the SABC.

Pay your license, it's the right thing to do...yeah right.

Blame Telkom

Ok, this is the excuse that the SABC came up with when their switchboard operators were being sworn at by irate cricket fans. Seriously, I'd take a dump in their lobby if I was in the vicinity...Surely they must have prepped for the broadcast, blaming Telkom is not enough.

Report taken from SAPA:

Meanwhile, thousands of fans were frustrated by the lack of radio commentary on Radio 2000 and the indigenous radio stations because of a glitch between the SABC and Telkom, which meant that the necessary lines were not working on the first day of the most anticipated Test of the century in South Africa. Commentary is expected to be up and running on Friday.

They've sorted the problems out BUT I must say besides Neil Manthorpe the rest of the commentators are shocking. The knowledge of the game and its history is scary.

At one point they were debating which fielder was fielding the ball. The referral system has confuddled them completely. There was one debate they had at the start of play on Friday, one asked the other how many non-South African's had scored double hundreds at Wanderers. So the other looks it up and says 3, 1 was Brian Lara and the other 2 were Australians. So the one replies, "How many of them were Australian?". The one replies in silence, probably shocked at such a dumb question. The question is asked again, "How many were Australian?". ARGH!!!! SABC.
