If you watch the video it's from a time so different than now
I can't imagine seeing such a crowd in a football stadium again.
Can't say the same about our beloved national team.
RIP.Still remember the aeroplane celebration after he scored to get us to 1998.
Her?Never heard of her, rest in peace
Cape Town - The football world was mourning the passing of legendary Bafana Bafana striker, Phil "Chippa" Masinga on Sunday.
Masinga, who spent time in hospital in December after he was diagnosed with cancer was 49. The tall striker played for a number of clubs during his distinguished career, including a spell at Leeds United in the English Premiership in the mid-1990's.
"Chippa" as he was affectionately known to South African fans played 40 times for the club, scoring 11 goals.
Masinga wrote himself into Leeds folklore on January 18, 1995 when he scored a nine minute hat-trick for the club after coming on as a 91st minute substitute against Walsall in an FA Cup encounter at Elland Road.
With the teams locked 2-all in extra time, Masinga scored his first in the 105th minute after combining with the late Gary Speed.
His second came with a glancing header from a Gary McAllister corner while his third, and best of the lot saw Masinga curl the ball past the advancing Walsall keeper from 15 metres out.
I was there at Soccer City when that happened. That aeroplane was so close to the stadium that the vibrations from its engine noise changed the entire spirit of the place. What a day!
Edit: Oh, and Rest in Peace, Phil. Yiu served your country well without any controversy. Legend...
I can't find any reference to a plane flying over like it did for the 1995 Rugby world cup at Ellis or the Global citizen competition.
Maybe it's because people think they're useless. What have they ever achieved in the international arena compared to the proteas or boks? Money is not an issue in the least, on a local scale compared to rugby & cricket.. How many times have players been called t the national team and declined because they're playing for european teams where the money is much better. I also don't see thee same pride in wearing the jersey as with cricket & rugby for example. And the you get the mafia like soccer bodies.
EDIT: Sorry, this post is not about reflecting badly on the man that is Phil Masinga to be clear.
