Often wondered how exactly they works?

I understand the fake website to get the username/password ... but what then?
They can't create a beneficiary or do anything with the OTP/cellphone?

I know the new way is to intercept - but I thought this was only recently?
How did they do phishing in the past - or have they always needed to intercept?

There was no OTP in the past. The new scammers expect you to also send them your OTP so you have to be a total plank to fall for it.

Lately they do a simswap on your account, meaning they will get the OTP.

The phishing scams are one of the main reasons banks implemented OTP, so before that it was quite easy.

So the *scam is old, as banks have OTP for many, many years ... ?

* excluding SIM swap variation

OTP isn't that old. When banks implemented OTP the thieves switched to getting your details and then buying enormous amounts of airtime to sell on I presume. Then the banks made buying airtime without OTP impossible and apart from those vodacom guys who intercepted someone's SMS they don't succeeded too often.

This landed in my inbox this morning,
