As per title.

Telkom claim no issue, as usual.

Some brief googling shows this to possibly be something to do with a disconnect somewhere that the higher frequency ADSL can 'jump' across?

Just want to be armed for the ensuing conversation with Telkom if possible.

Thanks.

Check/replace filters, if you still no dial tone after making sure the filter(s) is working call Telkom again.

phone 50 volt dc. your search is correct.
Cannot believe they haven't got a telephone line tester. testing the whole line [adsl] and dc frequency spectrum.

I would say just take the filter out completely. If you suddenly have a dial tone then there's your answer.

Experiencing same issue at the moment and this happens a few times a year for me.

According to the techs apparently this is happening due to there being more users than available phone ports so they literally disconnect someone else when they connect us back.

Don't know how true that is because my dsl is working albeit intermittently but it honestly wouldn't surprise me...

Have you reported the telephone line fault? If not count yourself lucky, because they tend to be sorted out faster and often fix any ADSL faults.

Last post from dosti seems to explain why dsl still works and phone is dead... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/124313-ADSL-is-ok-Voice-line-dead-Why

This is a good starting point.

We had the same thing happen a few months ago. Telkom claimed that there was no problem and all was fine if ADSL was working.. Yet we had fsckall happening on the voice side of things. ADSL also worked but it was fluctuating between "errr...time for a smoke break" and "no no, just wait a while...I'm really high right now".

Our cordless phone's indicator light was constantly showing "Line in use". If you have a cordless somewhere it may be interesting to see if that shows the same thing.

Anyway, Telkom EVENTUALLY sent someone out - the tech said that that we only had 1 of the 2 wires in the pair still working and that was the cause... I thought it was BS, apparently it can happen.

Actually started a thread about it:

ADSL dead now as well.

Is there any way to find out when a bloody technician might pitch up, or is that classified information for some reason, FFS.

Agreed. I also get better results logging faults as dsl faults.

Cool thanks, dont know how I missed that thread ;)

Keep following up with them on a daily basis and try and call in the morning so they are more likely to avail a tech for you that day.

If your DSL is through your ISP then they should run with it.

Luckily for me my line seems to be fixed. Dsl went down for an hour during the day and then phone and dsl came back up. Unfortunately a tech didnt come to the house to inform us the fault was resolved but im now syncing at double my previous speed and it seems to be stable... till next time :)

I had the same problem a few months ago, first no voice and eventually no dsl, after several calls with no response I saw a Telkom tech working at the box in the streets a few block down.
I took her a cooldrink and sat waiting for her to finish and took her to my house to fix my problem - a dead pair, and a dodgy extension in my house.
Funny incident was she had to get onto a ladder to reach the line going into the house, but she had a fear of heights and wouldn’t get onto the ladder, so I had to get up and the disconnect the line for her.
