Hey guys.
Sorry for yet another post about this (I read some other posts with similar issues but am not very technically-inclined in terms of setting up my own cabling, etc) so I thought I would just post my issue here and see how it goes.
My family recently purchased and renovated an old house, which either did not have an existing telephone line or the builder cemented over the line when re-doing the floor. My mom runs a business from home and requires a stable telephone line (we have a wireless Neotel phone but it sucks and doesn't record voicemail) and I require ADSL for both work purposes and gaming (using 3G at the moment but it also sucks really hard and is crazy expensive). I contacted Telkom about getting ADSL (I wasn't aware at the time that we didn't have an existing line) and after two months they just canceled the order and said that "there is a lack of infrastructure in the area."
Now, I live just off Florida Road in Durban, which if you're from Durban you will know is choc-a-block with businesses and houses which would all be equipped with telephone lines/ADSL (both my neighbours have). When the Telkom technician came over I quizzed him about what I could do but he just gave me some mumbo-jumbo answer which I really didn't gain anything from. I have been told that an order was put through to 'town planning' but, with it being a government department, I don't see anything happening for a long time. Should I get an electrician to install the telephone line? Will I need a Telkom technician to attach the cable from my properly to the exchange? (I have a box just outside my house, apparently.) I am unable to get wireless internet due to no line of sight (tall buildings and trees surrounding the house).
Please advise.
Thanks,
Chris.
