Hi guys, sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Recently purchased a D-Link router but have a little problem.

The cable that leads out of the filter thingy on the wall only has a connection for a phone line. Now with my Telkom router that was fine because the connection for internet on the route was through a phone line cable like this -

Now with my new router, the internet connection is through Ethernet, as seen here -

So basically what I have got to do is find an adapter or something right? Basically switch the cable on the right of the pic to the cable on the left -

Any ideas on what I need to do or buy?

Thanks for the help

Yeah you need a converter. Commonly it's known as a "modem". Odds are an ADSL modem is what you're looking for, to be more specific. :p

Your router seems to be just a router and not a modem. You will need a modem to first plug in the phone line jack from the filter. You will then connect your dlink router to the modem via ethernet.
Woops.. feeling a little embarrassed right now.:o Thanks guys :)
What model number is the new unit?
DIR-600 :)

Well I'm not too clued up on all this technical stuff but I think it probably would've been better to pay more for a router + modem all-in-one

Oh well..

So basically this is just a router without internal ADSL modem? Whats the point?

Believe it or not, but there are other internet connection technologies other than ADSL available. Cable and fiber come to mind quickly. People who make use of these connections may also want to use DynDNS, IP routing and what-have-you, like the rest of us.

Ahhh but in SA we dont have that do we? So it would make more sense to buy an all in one unit no?

My router and modem are separate, for the simple reason that I like modularity. My Telkom modem/router combination: well, first the router part died and a few months later the modem part as well. Quite funny.

WiMax?

I'm sure you could still sell it, or return the device explaining you bought it under the impression it was an ADSL router. Even if you can't sell it, you could always it for connecting to a WUG (depending if there is a node(s) near by.

Just get a modem as well. I've seen DLink units (Though I loath the brand) for just over R200, so it's hardly the end of the world if you can't return it easily.

That's a USB one - you're looking for one with Ethernet. Also, a 8MBit limit will indeed prevent you from connecting at 10MB, but keep in mind that 8MBit is the theoretical maximum for standard ADSL and an ADSL2.0 capable modem would allow you to connect at 10MBit.

Okay I think i'm just going to buy a new Router/Modem and try get rid of the one I have now. Thanks for all your help :)
