Hi

I have a strange scenario which I am unsure how to solve. This is Happening with 2 different routers. Older D-Link and a newer Tenda AC 6.

On a laptop connected the wifi, I get full up and down speed, can access the internet without problem. Cable Ethernet is also fine. But phones, on the same wifi, can barely get any upload speed. If i do a speedtest, i get full download but upload barely gets above 1 mbps. This happens only on phones. I have a Samsung Galaxy A70, there is also a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and a Hisense H30. As mentioned this is happening with 2 completely different routers.

This is the weirdest issue I have encountered and I don't know what to do. if anyone has had a similar issue please let me know how to resolve this.

Thanks

PCs may be using 5GHz and the mobile phones 2.4GHz. Or visa versa.

Try disabling 5GHz on your router, test, disable 2.4GHz, enable 5GHz, test.

Have you checked settings eg QOS? Might be other devices prioritised or phones limited?

No, both on same 2.4g wifi. But will play around.

So to clarify, the issue happens in my parents house. The tenda router is one that I had used previously in my house without any issue. I had no device priority on it.

Did you inspect/scan for the best channel using an app?
I used the tenda app to verify the wifi for the tenda router. If there is another app i should try, let me know.

Cannot say that it is a good/bad app etc... but I have personally used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en_ZA&gl=US

It is just odd that the laptop is happy, but the phone(s) are not. The main difference is the wifi antenna?

So just to check, you tried two different routers, and both gave the same results on all the phones? Was this at different locations with different internet providers? Do you have a VPN or something odd on the phones? Have you tried alternative speed tests, e.g. FAST.com etc?

Do you have a free wifi hotspot at a mall or something close by that you can use to perform a speedtest from just for an extra data point?

It has me completely dumbfounded. The laptop is about 5-6 years old. The phones are relatively new. A70 is about 3 years, and the S20 is the FE model which came out last year i think, so it's practically new(ish) by technology standards.

Tried 2 different routers. a Netgear which is oldish, probably about 6-7 years but has the latest firmware from what I can confirm and does support latest wifi technologies. The Tenda is the Ac6, which I used in my house until i got a ac10. I know from past experiences i never had trouble with it and it's on the latest firmware. My parents have the same fibre setup as me, which is Rocketnet on Openserve. I have a higher bandwidth package but that's trivial in this case as a ethernet connected speedtest is perfectly fine along with the laptop wifi. No VPNs on the phones(My mother is not tech savvy and I definitely don't have any vpn setup on my phone.) Speedtest services used is Mybroadband app on my phone. Also used Speedtest.co.za and speedtest.net from my phone and my mother's. Everytime from about the same location within a meter from the router.

I live relatively close to my parents and on my network I get proper results when using my phone.

I'll try out that app. The only other thing I am thinking that could potentially be the cause is this. My father(whom is out of the country) setup an old UPS that he had for the router and it is right next to the router. SO I'm thinking heavy electrical interference, but if that was the case then the laptop would have problems as well (or not). So i want to take that out of the equation and see if that is perhaps the cause. Other then that I am completely dumbfounded by this. This is the weirdest issue i've ever come across.

Yep, has to environmental then. Shut down all the electronics in the room and try again - give the OTP etc clean/direct power, not from the UPS.

Whatever app you use will not be able to detect this kind of interference.

Just to update and close off this thread. I have discovered that the issue is a PEBKAC issue on my part, for not reading the ISP's email, that contains the settings for connection, thoroughly. There was a specific MTU value that they specified needed to be set to, and it wasn't set to that, and after I set it to that value everything is working fine.

Thanks to everyone that gave advise and help.
