Phone upgrade frequency

fast, shiny new phone from China every 8 months.

Flagship is nice for 6 months then it's just a mid range. By 24 months it's a door stop. And for all that you have the privilege of parting with R12K

Crap man, my Nexus 5 is far from a doorstop.
Runs WhatsApp, YouTube etc just fine.

Flagship for four years.

I think I saw this debate over on gsmarena.

I personally would take a midranger every two years. The money saved not going flagship I can put to good use elsewhere. To me a phone is there for phone calls and messages and the odd photo. The fact that it has Tapatalk and Reddit and Youtube are merely added benefits :p

Keep telling yourself that. My S6 is what 3 yrs old. It feels as fast as anything new ive tried if not faster. The need to get a new phone every week is no longer valid for most people.

Hardware will be super outdated by that point and you probably wouldn't have seen a single software update in those last 2 years.

Only ever had Nexuses or iPhones. Four year update cycles are normal. And bloatfree flagship hardware holds up okay.

Flagship & 2

Current one is about a year old. Will probably get whatever the next ifruit is.

Earlier if I break it, later if the current one still feels fine

Seems quite wasteful.

Flagship every two years. Main reason I go for flagships is the good camera. Couldn't be arsed to carry around a POS or SLR anymore.
These days its becoming less important to upgrade often as innovation seems to be slowing down.

I buy tri-proof IP68 phones. After 6 months the phones have taken a good beating but still function well. I pay less than R4k for a good spec mid range every 8-12 months. My "old" phones generally find a new home and someone benefits from a free phone.

In that case, absolutely. iPhone hardware is nowadays pretty far ahead of the android stuff so those will last. The other brands will definitely let you down after a year or two.

3 year old S6. It's still up to date ito SW and hasn't slowed down. Will change when it dies or starts lagging.

Bought it when S7 was out. Will probably buy another previous generation flag ship when time to get a new phone.

Yeah fair. My dad's business partner rolls with cheap phones too...they tend to get fkd on construction sites so no point rolling a flagship.

Best story thus far is one falling down an elevator shaft onto solid concrete and still being fine (some ancient samsung).

Flagship every 12-24months, depending, e.g. I had my Galaxy Note 4 for the full 24months and I was meant to get the Note7 but we all know how that ended, and I landed up with a Galaxy S7 Edge, great phone, however no SPen and so after 12months I moved to the Note8, and with the Note8 I think I can go another year with it and make it 24months.

So not just flagship, but Galaxy Note flagship :)

A Sony Xperia Z3 Compact from 2015 is still plenty for my needs. Have looked at upgrade possibilities and nothing really offers enough more to justify changing the phone. Sure a XZ Compact would be nice but really not needed.
