Congrats to all the finalists, great shots.
Nicci gets my vote on the following grounds:
Photo taken with an actual camera that has less features, funtionality and versatility than the Prize camera.
IMHO
(Simple rule of thumb for "Win a Camera competitions" , the picture must come from a camera that is less than the camera being won, not equal to or greater than the prize camera.)

And IMO - If it's not a competition rule then you're doing a disservice to the other contestants who entered in good faith.
Are you're also discounting the cellphone finalist on these grounds?
With a few exceptions gear isn't as important as non-photographers believe it to be. It's just as easy, if not easier in fact, to take a bad photo with R20k worth of gear as it is with a R750 point and shoot.

To a competition on MyBB? Not in the slightest.
BTW - what about people who borrowed or rented cameras that they can't themselves afford to own? I'm pretty sure that Apoc184 doesn't/didn't own the camera and lens he took his photo with.

Some of my photos that weren't selected - notably those of birds and other wildlife - were taken with my camera body and either a Nikon 200-400 f/4 or a 500 f/4 lens. Both of these lenses are in the R 80k - R 100k region. I rent them as and when needed.
So your point is very valid, lots (I'd say a very large percentage actually) would rather rent camera bodies and/or lenses, lighting equipment and other accessories.

If i offended any of the finalists who may have used rented/borrowed equipment, then i apologise for any offence unintentionally caused by my opinion.
At the end of the day we all use different criteria in how we choose things.

Personally I don't think any argument of value of gear should ever come into play, because we don't know that the person entering isn't rich while another entrant is incredibly poor. The photo, at the end of the day, should be all that matters. That and whether or not any other factors fall within the rules of the competition.
And Nanfeishen, with reference to bit about the Canon Expo thing you quoted, that's specific to the Canon Expo competition. This MyBB competition served as promotion for that competition and the expo - the two are otherwise unrelated.

Rented from Outdoorphoto for the day to see what combo of lens + camera will work nicely for me while doing rugby.
