Photo opportunities

Hello, I am starting photography and would like to know how do any of you find events to take photos of, and preferrably free or cheap to attend?

Do you know websites of events or do you just google popular places/attractions near where you stay?

I'm sure there will be a New Years event in the coming days somewhere near you. I know in Cape Town there will be events at the V&A Waterfront and at the Grand Parade - both free.

It might be a super moon. It it's also a new moon so you won't see jack. Wait until august.

Use a long zoom lens.
Always use a tripod and shutter release or timer cable.
Don’t use a low f-number.
Don’t use a slow shutter speed.

This is cropped from the full image, and it's a bit soft. I have the RAW file, but I've just recently got started with this stuff so I don't really have any post-processing knowledge. The crop was taken from the camera-generated JPEG. I think I had the image stabiliser enabled, only realised afterwards that its recommended to disable stabilisation when you are on a tripod, because the way that IS works is to actually generate small vibrations of its own which it uses to detect and correct camera shake. These vibrations actually end up causing blur when you are tripod mounted.

I took a handful of snaps that night and I haven't had a chance to try again.

You would expect to use a longer exposure at night, but the key thing to realise is that the light you see from the moon is reflected sunlight, so you actually use settings much closer to daylight than you would expect.

There's a duathalon in Sandton 24 and 25 October 2015. I want to go and only shoot with my Canon 50mm/f1.8 STM. See what I can get...
