( Im not sure if this is the right section of the Forum)
Im looking at harddrives for my images and videos and other stuff(documents etc) and was thinking of something like a small drobo, but the post by Scott Kelby on his Drobo experience and that he had to send his drobo in to have the data recovered put my of, I currently have two external WesternDigital harddrives running on firewire 800 on my imac, and another drive, but they are filling up, and ill be needing more space, my imac doesnt have usb3 so I always have to search for drives with Firewire800 and they are not freely available in (brick)shops, so Im looking at something with Firewire800 and USB3(for when i upgrade my imac in a year or two, still unsure if ill stay with mac or go to pc so thunderbolt isnt necessary at the moment), but have since discovered this,
But I dont really know how it work, I have discovered the acronyms RAID/NAS etc and deciphered the NAS part as Network Attached Storage , but Does this mean I do need a 'Network" like at the office ,or can I just plug the NAS device into the network plug on the back of my imac, like you would do with a usb/firewire external harddrive or do I need 'other stuff(those boxes with all the wires running into them)' to make it work.
And would this be suitable for editing images and videos(from time to time), would it be fast enough
I would like something , where I can just add/buy new drives all the time and not have to worry if its firewire or not, or should I just stick to a firewire enclosure and get a harddrive for that, my current WD drives are 'sealed' and I wouldnt want to spoil the exterior to add a new drive. If this is the right product what brand should one go with , Seagate/ Synology/ D-link or something else I cant remember all the names at the moment.
Thanks
