A mate of mine wants to go into photography full time. He has good but is struggling to find new business.

Any tips from the pros?

Lemme try and make it sound less ADSL like, and more photo like :)

What is his best / preferred photography style?
Has he started advertising yet, if so where?
Does he have a portfolio of his work? This is one of the most important components of starting a photography business.

And probably the most important, does he have a decent camera, and good experience with it, as well as taking very good photos? Seriously though, many people think that since they paid a lot of money for a digital camera, they're pro photographers. For a full time photographer, a point-and-shoot isn't an option. A decent (preferable semi-pro camera) with a decent lense, probably off camera flash and some other stuff is almost a must. And altough you could get by with a R2K P&S, it's probably not going you help you make a big difference.

My brother's wedding photographer cost them R4k for the day. And what a dissapointment it was when they rocked up there with a P&S camera? Needless to say,their photos weren't that good either. I'm not stepping on anyone's toes with this one, but giving a real life example of "using the right tool for the job" principle.

If someone did that at my wedding - I'd open a can of whip-ass - but then again, what does R4k buy these days.

He likes to photograph people. So he is into weddings mostly.

He has a pretty decent kit, lots of gear. So his equipment is very good. He has been advertising, handing out pamphlets mainly - he has a portfolio.

Any ideas on where is best to start advertising?
 
weddings are normally easy, advertise @ wedding registries, directories, wedding shops, etc. Also, there's the wedding expo (on this weekend) which is a good place to start as well.
