Hi I am an amateur photographer but would like to become more professional in my approach. Can anyone recommend a good course (one that covers all the basics and then goes on to professional techniques )

Youtube is your friend... and use 500px and flickr for inspiration. Don't pay crazy money for these weekend courses!

It might help if you state what area your in.

A half a day with a good instructor can get you up to speed quicker than a weekend with YouTube.

What Bwana says does make sense, but then again, this greatly depends on the value of your time... :P

Personally, I find little value in courses, and for me the most effective way of learning was shooting a lot (Don't just snap the same subject from the same perspective with the same settings. Rather decide on a subject, decide on a couple of angles/perspectives that you would like to try, and then shoot each of those at a couple of different settings), doing analysis of settings in post (figuring out which combination of angles/settings works and which don't).

Often, especially when starting out, I found it quite difficult to decide which shot I preferred as most of the criteria were pretty subjective. Eventually you will develop a taste and an eye for what you like. In the early stages try and use the resources available to you to receive some feedback on images. Show someone your photos and ask for feedback (preferably in person, but forums will also do).

Please note that this advice is to be taken with a pinch of salt. I may be an exception to the rule, as I managed to land a position in an agency with some incredibly talented individuals early on in my career. This exposed me to massive amounts of amazing photography which led to major improvements in both technique and quality...
