Can you recommend any photography courses in/around the Pretoria area? I'm just a hobbyist, so I'm not looking at a full time course. Maybe something like over a few weekends or so.

Also, any comments on those where you take the course online and upload assignments and photos as you progress?

Thanks in advance.

Youtube will be a good start. Then take your camera and start taking photos. Personally, I wouldn't take lessons, you can learn more from the internet.

Maybe contact the crew at ODP. Iirc they're in the area.

Do you mean the Outdoor Photo guys, bwana? Will definitely look into that, thanks.

Do you mean the Outdoor Photo guys ...
Yes ... at the very least join their forums. They have fantastic monthly beginner assignments that gets judged and commented on by some of the top guys around.

At the end of the day you can attend as many courses, watch online tutorials or read as many books as you want but you won't learn anything practical until you get out there and start taking photos.

But most importantly ... Enjoy what you're doing!

Thanks guys,

Will be getting my first dslr soon. Been shooting with my trusty old Canon Powershot S2 for years. I am ready ;)

I know of a guy who offers a very basic but very helpful "get to know your camera" course (about 2hrs long) at a reasonable fee.

It is aimed at beginners / amateurs and really help to understand your SLR better. If you want his details, send me a PM

Jared Polin has some good beginners videos on his Youtube Channel

There are many more and i have found Youtube to be the best tutor I too wanted to attend a course not so long ago but realized I've learnt more by myself than what most courses can teach.

As others have said; take pictures! you cant learn how to do something unless you do it.

Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony include comprehensive complimentary courses with their cameras.
The introductory course is labelled 'User Guide' while the intermediate level one is labelled 'Camera_model Manual'.

No but seriously; the vast majority of beginner to intermediate courses happen to teach you *nothing* more than you'd learn from your camera's manual and just fiddling a bit.
Once you've got a handle of how your camera and lens(es) work(s), it's down to learning what you can do with your tools to get creative and actually taking photos - and learning how to manipulate natural light and work with artificial light.
