Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to photoshop?

Yea Gimp is more than adequate, but its bit of a steep learning curve in the beginning.

If you don't need all the Photoshop features, look at Photoshop Elements - it's a slimmed down version - about R1200 - and more than adequate for tweaking photographs etc.

PAINT.NET is also free but I have never bothered to figure out its features so don't know if it has just as many bells and whistles.
