i am considering taking a php, mysql course with a company called New Horizons in Cape Town.
Anyone think it is worth it? It costs 10000 for 10 days.
I am in the web industry and have a job and work free lance but feel i am limited as I only know css, xhtml with a bit of javascript and php.
Would doing a full course in php, mysql be worth it, or should i do a course in javascript instead and then work toward knowing java?
Thanks.

No, its not worth it.

Rather have a look at these books with focus on http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764557831.html and http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764572822.html depending on your current skill level.

And I have not been impressed by any of the courses I have done at New Horizons (Gauteng).

Javascript and java is in no way connected to each other. Knowledge of one will not significantly improve knowledge of the other.

Pick either php or java and focus on gaining knowledge on that, dont try doing both at the same time.

I dont have any good java books to suggest, but I did a java course (5 months) at http://www.vzap.co.za/index.htm but I do not know if they have a branch in Cape Town.

Personally, I think that you could learn as much in 10 days by doing some home study and save yourself the 10 Grand.

You would need some desktop tools so that you can run your scripts. VertrigoServ is a good all-in-one and easy-to-setup package which includes the Apache web server + PHP + MySQL + phpMyAdmin. You can also download the PHP & MySQL manuals. A good book to start PHP with is PHP in a Nutshell . This is freely available online. A good Open Source development tool would also come in handy.

I will suggest you rather put the money towards doing a quick "programming basics" type course rather than a PHP course. PHP is really just a scripting language, and if you have the basics sorted (for programming), you'll pick it up pretty quickly. Java, on the other hand, is quite a lot more complex (it is a fully fledged language), and a course in Java will be to your benefit.
