Hey hey

Please share your recipes on how to make Phutu (crumbly) and Pap.

Thanks!

Boiling water; corn meal, how difficult can it be!:D

:sick:Ask DJ. Because I draw the line right there.

It's quite easy.

Put phutu in pot.
Add water
Call your nearest decent take-away
Use phutu for wallpapering your house while you wait for your real food to arrive...

JC, haven't you people ever had pap en wors? With a tomato and onion "smoor"?

This is as South African as you can ****ing get.

Yeah. It might be as South African as it ****ing gets, but it's also as disgusting as food ****ing gets...

May be South African, but that doesn't make it particularly edible...

Edible?!?!?

It's one of the most nutricious plates of slop you'll ever ingest. Mealie meal and it's fibre and the protein of the boerewors with the vitamins of tomatoes. What more do you want?

I haven't had Phutu in decades. Used to make it all the time. As far as I remember, I used to fill the bottom quarter of the pot, boil the water then take the pot off the boil, pour in the mielie meal and form a triangle half submerged in the water, boil the water some more and then put on low heat and mix until cooked.

This is from memory and decades ago so I might have some details mixed up. Used to love it with butter and mielies.

Most of the time you impress me, but sometimes you disappoint me.

I'm quite sure there are plenty of foods I eat that you wouldn't consider touching. Phutu pap is a tasteless, grainy carbohydrate, no matter how much tomato gravy you attempt to mask it with. The texture is hurl-worthy...

Stopped reading right there :D

I want something that I could actually enjoy eating. Give me the boerewors and tomato gravy. Just don't expect me to even consider pap is all.

You would probably find that the majority of South Africans eat it and enjoy it. Would be interesting to see the sales stats of mielie meal.

It's been a staple for many people for many generations, particularly black people. That doesn't mean that they necessarily enjoy it but you're right, they probably do after hundreds of years of it being one of their few sources of nutrition. Price and access has a lot to do with it, as does the legacy of it being considered a food for blacks. When rations were handed out for example, blacks were given maize meal while whites were given meat, Indians rice. Read about this in the Siege of Ladysmith iirc...

'stywe' pap I don't enjoy at all, 'krummel' pap is ok but it needs a mean tomato/onion/mushroom sauce to go with it else you can give it to the birds.

Wat is a Vrystaatse toebroodjie?

~ Twee skywe stywe pap met slap pap tussen in.

2.5 cups water
3 cups Ace
Salt to taste

Boil water, add salt, chuck meal into the center of the pot, put lid on, low heat for 20 minutes and then mix with a large fork. Another 20 minutes and mix. If not done another few minutes.

If you want something really delicious put a generous amount of pap in a bowl and then pour amasi over it plus sugar if you want it sweet.

Ohhh!!!! I love Phutu. Nice and hot with sugar and milk. Or with a nice tomato sauce.

Now I want. :(
