Its all about the volumes, the net margin at the end of the day is cut throat.

This. Baked beans or goods that pull feet into the store are low, like 2%. The real money is in the fresh foods/ fruit and veg (like 40% to balance out wastage). Thats why theres been such a big push in the fresh foods departments of late.
 
I would guess 15% on run of the mill items.

I know this guys, they importing lots of nice stuff, but unfortunately I'm in JHB.
 
The most expensive shop in my area is the Spar. Some of their items are way more expensive than the other stores. One thing I have noticed about them is that when they have their special on 2 liter milk (the ones in the carton box) they never have stock of the full cream. But you can go the next morning when the special has ended and their shelves will be full of the full cream milk that was on special.

well, if OP tells us then everyone will go there and then factory shop is bound to notice this increased interest and adjust price accordingly. I see OP's point. ;)
 
You seem to be ignoring the importers own markup to the retailer.

There's a reason it's a factory shop.

Those specials I think are to clear older stock. A lot of retail specials have that goal.
