Pick your Springbok 22 for 2009

15 - Stefan Terblanche
no-one else is close at the moment.

Yes I know its a bit early and a lot can still happen buuuut I want to see who you guys think are the 22 that we should send with current injuries to some players.

  1. -Guthro Steenkamp (my choice would be J Du Plessis ... Guthro is overrated)
  2. -John Smit
  3. -Tendai Mtawarira
  4. -Bakkies Botha
  5. -Victor Matfield
  6. -Juan Smith (I'd go with J Deysel .... Juan only knows 1-man rugby)
  7. -Schalk Burger (too off form ... I'd pick H Brussow)
  8. -Piere Spies (Kankowski to start)
  9. -Fourie du preez
  10. -Butch James (out injured so stick with Ruan)
  11. -Bryan habana (also off form imo, so any of Nokwe or either the Ndungane twins)
  12. -Jean de Villiers (I take it he will be ready for the 1st test)
  13. -Jacques Fourie (PdV says he is to play fullback  Him + JdV = best centre combo IMO)
  14. -JP Pietersen (Experience is what gets him the jersey ahead of Akona)
  15. -Stefan Terblanche (Best fullback atm)
  16. -Bismarck du Plessis
  17. -Deon Carstens
  18. -D Vermeulen?
  19. -Danie Rossouw (He can play lock, 8th man or flanker but I have a feeling Kanko will get this slot) (Spies)
  20. -Wynand Olivier (Rather adi jacobs if he recovers in time) / Ruan Pienaar
  21. -Rory Kocket (will increase the pace in the last 20-15 mins, also a kicker if butch is having a bad day or hurt)
  22. -Akona Nungane/Nokwe

so far .....

so far .....
-Guthro Steenkamp (my choice would be J Du Plessis ... Guthro is overrated)

Lol, you probably have not watch one game the bulls have played this year?

He is scrumming well, a terror in defence and a great ball carrier. Wish I could get some stats on Steenkamp vs Du plessis. Not that Jannie is bad (he is on my bench to kill them in the scrums in the last 30 mins), Guthro is just better :) (MO)

-Juan Smith (I'd go with J Deysel .... Juan only knows 1-man rugby)
-Schalk Burger (too off form ... I'd pick H Brussow)

I repeat I will go for experience for this season (sure PdV and the sellectors are thinking the same)also both Burger and Juan are better in a boks jersey than for said provinces. Yes Deysel has been very good this season but Brussouw was better and I would take him with for the bench.

-Bryan habana (also off form imo, so any of Nokwe or either the Ndungane twins)

Again I have to ask have you been watching any of the Bulls games? Did you see last weekends? He hit a gap between two players, one of them Ryan Cross, an ex-rugbyleague player brought into the side for his good defence. He also might still not be 100% match fit... But scoring 3 tries in 4 (IIRC) matches is still far from bad don't you think?

-Butch James (out injured so stick with Ruan)

Forgot he was injured:o Yeah then I will also then go with pienaar just because we don't really have anyone else. But that leaves us with the problem of a kicker because Pienaars goalkicking has been slightly better than bakkies botha's.

-Piere Spies (Kankowski to start)

6 of one and a half dozen of the other......

Im going with Spies again because of his experience with the team. Oh and because Kanko gets a concussion after 3 mins on the field, we need tough guys against the lions :p:D J/k O and by the way check out spies's 5 tries ;)

Sharks front row will be the Bok front row. Beast, du Plessis, Smit.

Smit has played very well at both prop and hooker this season. Would definitely have Gurthro on the bench. I like the idea of both him and Beast rampaging around the field.

Lol, yeah actually Guthro's playing style will be better in the last 30 mins bacuase his defence is great and he plays a bit of a looser game (not loser:p).

Just wonder who will be kicking penalties

Oi, I watch all the SA teams games ...... I just don't support them like I do The Sharks is all :D

As for Habana, you obviously missed all the occasions when he was found wanting on defense, or rushed out of his position, or had handling errors, etc ...... 3 tries in 4 games does not mean in form, more tha tthe other guys are feeding him a lot of ball.

Yeah... Also if pienaar is injured who will play flyhalf? Jean d Vil? Or does PdV think that Jaques fourie can play flyhalf as well as fullback? :p

Rose will be in the squad. Offers more on attack than M. Steyn and Grant, plus he adds a comedy factor which can't be ignored.

If Rose is picked I'm gonna slash my wrists ...... with a plastic spoon.

for the love off all of SA's hotties why ....... he wouldn't know the game of rugby if it bit off his face ffs.

Lol, no he is not being fed a lot of ball. He looks for work. Like the last try he scored he was actually in a centre position (looking for work see :D). Also he goes for the intercept now and again and both PdV and Ludeke has said (and I agree): The points habana concedes vs the points gained by his actions are well worth it. But if he had to be replaced it will have to be with Akona or Jongi. Jongi's defence is a little suspect IMO but he offers more on attack than Akona.

Not 100% sure of this, M. Steyn is the leading point scorer in S14 rugby this year. And Rose is not even starting for the lions team atm :o

If the race card is not in question M steyn should get the call. Although I still think we have a serious lack of nr10s in SA. Our best is average :(

If Rose is picked I'm gonna slash my wrists ...... with a plastic spoon.

+1

Spies isn't that good anymore.
Kankowski and Watson are better.

Spies is a genetic freak who should be doing much better, but isn't! He is good on attack but he is useless on defence.

I hate Watson's politics but he is ironically playing better this year than ever. According to the Super 14 match stats he is currently ranked the best of the flankers in SA and 3rd overall for tackles made, least missed etc. (few articles about it in SA newspapers over the w/end)
Spies on the other hand misses 40% of his tackles, every game. If you're a loose forward, that simply is not good enough. It's always going to be a tough battle upfront against the B Lions.

It has been proven that experience and continuity is very important to maintain a successful team at national level so I find it quite amusing that people somehow still cling to their provincialism when "selecting" a national team.
The amount of injuries to Bok incuments are quite a concern, considering the test series against the British & Irish Lions is just around the corner:

Jean De Villiers (groin) - Hope he makes it in time for the B Lions because he is key in the midfield, combining with Fourie. JdV being Player of the Year was no fluke.
Butch James (knee) - out
Ruan Pienaar (knee) - expected to be ready, he's crucial (although I see even Jake White really rates Rose but thinks he needs to add 5 to 10kg)
Schalk Burger (calf) - expected to be ready
Adi Jacobs (shoulder) - decided not to have operation and will follow diff treatment just to play vs B Lions
Andries Bekker (ribs) - expected to be ready
Conrad Jantjes (broken leg) - out
Frans Steyn (knee ligaments) - out (could have covered at 15 for Jantjes with his big boot and will be missed as utility player

On a different note, I still want CJ van der Linde in the squad, even though he's in Europe.

The Springboks are the favourites to win the Test series, being the current World Champions and because they beat the british teams on their last tour in November '08 (admittedly didn't play the Irish). Then there's the obvious advantage of playing at home on familiar grounds, in preferred weather and in front of a supporting crowd. However, with injuries in key positions, it really levels the playing field.

I'm just annoyed that we may not be in a position to field our best team against the touring side because of these injuries and if we have any more, it will take away some of the magic. The Springboks were favourites in 1997 and lost; it's time to rectify that little error!

Yeah I agree he should be playing better, but he has steadily improved since coming back from injury.

You can not compare watson and spies, and yes I know watson is having a great/brilliant season. Ps how can he be ranked under flanker if he is playing 8th man half/most of the time?

Anyway then you go look at Spies scoring 5 tries in the S14... Different players, different playing styles. Kanko and Spies are much more alike and I have said that spies' expierence in the boks team would make me pick him. Also rugby is a team sport so I would never pick Luke watson if it would cause 9-15 other players to be unhappy and break the whole team spirit.

Sorry, meant loose forward.

I fully agree.
I didn't mean to imply that Watson should be selected, I was just impressed by the game stats I saw. His comments about the Springbok jersey didn't impress me and I sometimes think he's simply a mouthpiece for his father. Sadly so.

sorry but no one can convince me that Watson can outplay Danie Rousou. Wikus or Shalk for the flanker position. He just ain't good enough, despite his stupid comments.

Imo he is still to small for international rugby and yes he has played well this season but I still don't think he should be picked ahead of brussouw who has made the most tackles in the S14 thus far.
