Hi guys, I picked up my iPhone 5 today (black). Really excited about this. It's my first iPhone I ever owned. I am coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 which I still plan to keep. I am a true gadget fan and love android as well. I have previously tried Symbian on my N95 and N97(crap), Maemo on my N900 and android on my galaxy S2.

Maybe I will give windows 8 a try as well when I upgrade again. I thought that I would try all the ecosystems for myself so I know what is best for me.

I am grateful that I got one without any of the scratches or dents as people mentioned. I am truly amazed at the build quality .....well at least while it doesn't have scratches as yet:D ( got a case beside me as I speak )

It looks really smart and has that premium feel. It's also really thin as well. I still need to try and activate it by cutting up a sim and going through the setup process. I will immediately put in the case I have purchased since I always take really good care of my stuff. Plan on using a temporary screen guard till my sgp one arrives.

I haven't tried the ear pods as yet, but they don't seem like they can do better than the Sennheisers I have. Hope I can get this activated today and get a chance to play around.

If you guys want, feel free to ask me any questions about the build, accessories in the box, the accessories I have bought etc. will do my best to answer. Hopefully I can give you my first impressions.
 
It's not just a matter of cutting up the SIM. You will probably have to call up your cellco and ask them to transfer that particular SIM to the iPhone API. That could take 48 hours.

Not yet. When you first switch on a new iphone, the initial startup requires a sim inside. Any sim no matter the network. It's just for the first time boot up. Unfortunately SA doesn't have the sim as yet so many people cut up their original one to fit. I don't really want to try that. I read that vodacom will be getting stock soon so I might as well wait.
 
I think it's just the sim required. Other guys cut up their existing ones to activate the phone. I am clumsy and need to try a few prepaid ones before going anywhere near my daily sim.

I've had my iPhone 5 a week now, and carried it bare in my pocket all week, put it down on tables and desks, dropped it the other day. Not a mark, scratch or dent anywhere.

Just cut your sim, I've posted the template in one of my posts, and tried all the different shape contact types, all the sims work fine. I found it easier than when I had to cut from mini to micro for my original iPhone 4.

Some of the Voda outlets have the nano sim already
 
I managed to pick up a nano sim today at cellucity. Just R20...... Quite a bargain.

With no LTE as of yet in SA .... meaning you not using the LTE band , what is your battery file like? do you get a whole day?

or are you rushing for a charger at about 15:00?

Ok, heres what I use my phone for:
- Have a vodacom sim with 3g enabled and ususlly make around 5-10 calls a day.
- I have wifi on in the evening and do some web browsing and send a few messages on watsapp
- I was testing out the camera and snapped a few pics and videos.
- I have the gmail app and check and send emails.

I usually end the day with around 65-70% battery life remaining. I actually used the phone for about 2 days and charged it before it ran out of battery.

But please bare in mind that this is the battery life I am getting with "my usage".

Different people would have different usage all together.

What I can tell you is that you will definitely get more than a days worth out of it with medium usage.

If you are a heavy user, you may need to charge it in the evening.

I don't find myself running for the charger in a hurry.

No LTE over here either, and the iphone 5 seems to have the best battery life of any smartphone I have used.

My average use sees the phone easily lasting 2 days (and I struggled to get a full day use on a Galaxy S3 with similar usage previously).

I think you may have had a faulty S3 like I just had.
I got a swap out yesterday and the change has been impressive.

Hi - trying to figure out which models numbers and networks works:

1) what model number did you get (was it the 1429 gsm one?), and 2) what network are you on (any issues), 3) does your 3g work?

My phone is the GSM model from the apple store in the UK. I have tested this on Vodacom and MTN so far and there are no issues whatsoever. Both the networks work perfectly with good 3g reception.

I understand that the US versions of iPhones may give importers issues since they are CDMA phones.
