Picking a Wireless Router

Asus RT-N56U? about R1139 has pretty much everything except AC wifi

Good choice - Where did you find a place in SA selling that?

Wireless ac is not really worth it and the 5Ghz band is very weak on the signal side

ok so all in all I think that I'm getting myself into a complete spin of what to get.

So relooking at my needs, I need a wireless modem / router that allows me to plug in my telkom line and convert this into a wireless internet network. Not sure if the correct terminology is Router or Modem or both! Other than that:

1) +- R1500
2) Dual band
3) Wireless N - AC would be nice
4) Gigabit
5) USB - but can sacrifice this if need be
6) As fast as possible so that I can stream HD to my Apple TV

perhaps I'm asking for too much in my price range?

Yeah, maybe up your budget or lower your requirements.

After spending money on 5 router/modem combo's only for them to last just over a year - I suggest you invest in a decent router(provides the wireless and dhcp) and get a cheap modem(dials your internet connection)

Although this is my first ASUS Router - I really like it and it is stable as hell (Software and firmware is excellent as well) - It also comes with a 3 year warranty for piece of mind

hmmm thanks for the reality check.

Would R2K suffice?

Otherwise what combo would you recommend. I see from earlier you have the Asus DSL-N12U B1 however that is both a modem and wireless router if I am not mistaken?

PS the sad thing through all of this is a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk costs $188 on Amazon so Just under R2k

I actually have this 1 - Asus-RT-AC66U-Dualband-Wireless-AC1750-Gigabit-Router with a cheap D-Link modem that I linked before.

I would suggest you go for the Asus RT-N56U and get a cheapie modem like the one I have

Why do you need Gigabit Ethernet? Will you be moving files on the network?

Edit: not sure how good the range is on that particular Asus router because I don't see any antenna's
but from my limited experience with the Asus routers I can confidently say that it has given me more range than any other brand I've tried.

Also if you do intend buying Asus try buying it from a place like Wootware etc as they offer the normal 3 year warranty.
Most places like Takealot etc only offer a 1 year warranty

Well the files that I will be moving will be over the wireless so I guess it isn't a must. But would be nice to future proof it.

Thanks for the suggestions. What should I be looking at in terms of the Modem specs? And does the modem connect to the router with the WAN port correct?

You just need a basic single port ADSL modem that supports max speeds of 24 down and 1 up.
Correct - cable from the modem goes into the WAN port of the router

Thanks for the tip. I'm having a look at wootware now

What is the difference between the Asus RT-AC52U and ASUS RT-N56U?

Is the only difference AC wifi vs N? Surely the AC is worth the extra R100? or am I missing something?

Hmmm tough toss up:

According to the compare on asus's site the AC52U has AC wireless, 3 antenna as opposed to the N56U's 5, 1 USB as opposed to 2, the ac52u seems to have a lot more features with regard to QoS, guest network, multiple SSIDs and parental controls.

How far are the devices going to be that will be connecting wireless ? single or double storey?

I stay in a loft apartment so 1.5 hahaha! but it is a small apartment +- 75sqm

Just looking at the features of the routers and interested if I will be able to connect a device to the LAN and not internet via it's MAC address or will be able to setup a secondary WiFi network that will allow access to the LAN and not the internet
