Hi all,

I am new to the country and looking to get an adsl connection, back home in oz i had a 8mb adsl connection with a 50gb limit, throttling to 384k once hitting that limit.

I am looking for a service that is reliable so I can download games threw steam and other general browsing(youtube, video conferencing and what not)

any ideas or opinions? I work funny hours so I am home during the day occassionaly and have been reading about capping and throttling during the day.

Thanks in advance, Matt

Thanks for the quick response,

I have been reading about ADSL Line Rental and Phone Line Rental, in Australia you just need a phone line which adsl capable, having adsl on that line doesnt cost anything extra, does that Titan 3 package include that or will that be an extra on top from Telkom?

I was reading about MWEB's R899 Uncapped, I am assuming its not reliable during the day?

Thanks again, Matt

Welcome to Sa from Oz.

Firstly you will need a phone line installed from telkom with your adsl line installed and activated. This can take some time depending on where you live, depending on port availability aswell as work load for telkom.
Once that is installed and running you will then need to look at a data package from one of the isps.

Currently I'm on a 4meg uncapped gold account from openweb, so all depends on what you need. If you need any more questions just drop me a pm and I'll glad help.

I've used it occasionally during the day and it is good for HTTP (non-one click host) downloads, email and so on. There occasionally are issues such as certain sites timing out (and working 100%) if I use a VPN but I've only come across one such site myself (local post office tracking site) although other users have found more of them. Usually your HTTP will go at full speed.

Last night - I checked NetLimiter2 - downloads went at full 440KB/sec between 4am and 9am.

Not a bad price for capped bandwidth
R10 per GB is good price for capped account and there is no line speeds limits for titan 2+

R599 25GB including 10Mb/s line rental is a really good price
say R400 for the ADSL line (I don't yet know what telkom will charge for 10Mb/s lines but that is about what they charge for 4Mb/s)
then R199 for 25GB data
so it is about R7.96 per GB which is not bad

This. You won't get better than that at the moment unless you're prepared to spend quite a bit more.

The new cheap uncapped offerings are pretty mediocre (read the threads).

Depends for what - for standard HTTP traffic - they are great. Honestly, I get 440kB/sec around the clock for non P2P/1-click host traffic.

Doing this on my blackberry so will see how it goes, thanks for all the replies again.

My eyes have been attracted to the openweb gold 4mbps account, uncapped for 799 but then I also need the dsl line n phone line from telkom, I like the idea of uncapped, I have never had it before so it has got me very excited.

Thanks matt
