Swiss start-up Piëch Automotive has begun testing its first production car ahead of a market launch in 2024. Company was founded in 2019 by Toni Piëch, a son of the late Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch. /

Piëch GT revealed as EV European sportscar with analogue DNA

The Piëch GT has been officially unveiled as a premium electrified sportscar with traditional analogue ideals. The new contender from Switzerland promises to offer daily usability without compromise on the thrills.

Powering the Piëch GT are three 150 kW motors. One sits on the front axle while the other two sit on each wheel at the rear to give the coupe a rear-wheel drive feel. This sources power from a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that boasts a total claimed range of 500 km together with a fast charging time of up to 80 per cent in eight minutes. With this, the boutique firm claims a 0-100 km/h time of 3,0 seconds and a 0-200 km/h time of 9,0 seconds. Top speed is locked in at 250 km/h.

Overall dimensions of the sporty Piëch GT come in at 4 432 mm long, 1 991 wide and 1 250 tall with a wheelbase of 2 620 mm and overall mass of 1 800 kg. 60 per cent of this mass sits on the rear end.

Company founder Toni Piëch says “Piëch Automotive made a product promise at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Today we can proudly state that we can deliver on that promise. The entire vehicle concept, including the train and battery, is in place.

2024 Piech GT is retro sports EV with 600bhp and 311-mile range

Nascent Swiss firm details production version of its 2019 Mark Zero concept as prototype testing begins

More than two years after showing its Mark Zero concept car at the Geneva motor show, Swiss start-up Piëch Automotive has begun testing its first production car ahead of a market launch in 2024.

The outfit was founded in 2019 by Toni Piëch, a son of the late Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch. It plans to ultimately offer its new electric sports coupé in Europe, China, the US and various other global markets and will eventually follow it up with an SUV and the Sportlimousine saloon based on the same modular architecture.

The Mark Zero concept has become the GT and despite the name change remains largely faithful to the low-slung sports coupé shown in Switzerland, with Piëch promising that its “timeless” design means it “is not bound by any consumer cycles”.

It remains a two-door two-seater with a cab-rearward silhouette and a distinctive Kammtail-style rear end, measuring 4432mm long by 1991mm wide and 1250mm tall – not dissimilar proportions to the Porsche 911.

The EV’s powertrain, however, “has received a significant innovation” over the last two years. With a trio of motors (two on the rear axle and one on the front), the GT packs a combined 600bhp for a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.0sec.

Ah yes, the lesser spotted Aston 911.

Looks nice, let’s hope they can deliver.

The Piech GT electric sports car is on track for 2024

We haven’t seen it since 2019, but the Piech GT is on course for a launch in 2024

The electric Piech GT was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, but as is the case with so many of these ambitious start-ups we’ve not heard a peep about it since.

Fear not, though: Piech Automotive says it’s overcome delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and that the project is still ‘fully on track’ for a launch in 2024.

The Swiss firm - founded by the son of the late Ferdinand Piech - has moved its operations from Munich to Memmingen in southern Germany, giving it access to a test track among other things.

A second prototype vehicle was completed in March, and more are due over the next couple of years as the car’s development phase ramps for cold- and warm-weather testing. It’ll be going to the Nurburgring too, obviously.

The Piech GT has one front- and two rear-axle motors for a combined 603bhp. There’s no figure for top speed yet but the company reckons 0-62mph will take under three seconds and 0-124mph less than nine. A kerb weight of no more than 1,800kg is being targeted.

311 miles of range is promised from a 75kWh battery, and the firm claims that an 80 per cent charge will take eight minutes on any CCS2 charger.

But not being satisfied with that kind of turnaround time, it’s been working with electricity company TGOOD to develop a system capable of the same in charge in just four minutes and 40 seconds. Or very nearly 250 miles of range added in the time it takes to visit the loo at any given service station. Sounds TGOOD to be true…

Former AMG and Aston chief Tobias Moers is now the boss of Piech Automotive

Well, co-boss anyway. Moers links up with Manfred Fitzgerald to lead development of the 603bhp GT

Tobias Moers – the ex-boss of AMG and Aston Martin – has been appointed CEO and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of young Swiss brand Piech Automotive. Yep, that’s Piech Automotive as founded by the son of Ferdinand Piech, Toni.

Although actually, Moers will be joined as co-CEO by Manfred Fitzgerald – a man who spent twelve years as Director of Brand and Design at Lamborghini before being appointed as the global boss of Genesis and Hyundai Group Executive Vice President in 2015. These are big moves.

“With Manfred Fitzgerald and Tobias Moers, two established authorities from the sophisticated and rapidly evolving world of sports cars and automotive luxury brands join the Piech team. Both have a proven and enviable track record in this segment and possess extensive knowledge, an adept sense of how to communicate with exclusive customers and a distinct understanding of luxury brands,” said Toni.
