The Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday granted a preservation order for three properties, large amounts of cash, jewellery and other assets owned by a couple convicted of drug dealing.
Judge Isaac Madondo granted the order for the assets of the couple, Hoosen and Yasmin Mohamed, to be forfeited to the state. The basis of the application was that the assets were the proceeds of unlawful activities.
In December last year the couple pleaded guilty to two offences. Hoosen was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, of which seven years were suspended.
Yasmin received 18 months in prison plus a suspended sentence of 10 years for a period of five years.
The plea bargain took place in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.
According to court documents, the Mohameds have been dealing in drugs for about 20 years. Hoosen regularly bought large quantities of drugs in Durban and Yasmin packaged and stored them.
They had never worked. Hoosen had three previous drug convictions -- in August 1997 for possession of 99 mandrax tablets, in February 1998 for selling crack cocaine to an undercover agent, and in January 2010 for possession of three mandrax tablets.
Their dealing was lucrative as Yasmin went on expensive trips and bought valuable jewellery. She had paid cash for four cars.
At least nine drug runners were used to distribute drugs and the couple had regular clients.
Amounts of R2000 to R6000 were often taken from one of the couple's houses to another.
