My teenaged son is having a birthday in january and he loves gaming. I wanted to pimp his PC for him but don't know what specs would improve his gaming experience. He doesn't need anymore games...he has all the latest ones he's interested in.

The specs of his machine are as follows:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU [email protected] GHz
4 gig RAM
NVIDIA GForce 8400GS
22' LCD monitor etc

I was thinking of getting him a better graphics card...is that even necessary for CoDWaW, NFS, Far Cry 2 etc?

Any other suggestions?

An 8400GS is certainly not a gaming card. He must be playing newer titles at low settings/resolution?

What would your budget be for a new graphics card?

You could also consider a case with a windowed side panel with some LED fans. :p

I'd say go for the GTX260... It's affordable and worth every cent performance-wise. Especially the new one with the 216 stream processors.

Also consider the motherboard. Does it support SLI and/or crossfire? Cuz then you'd maybe buy another similar graphics card, and he'd use 2. The processor's fine, trust me. Plus maybe when he gets a lot o technical knowledge, he'll maybe clock the Q6600 horse

8400GS isn't SLI-capable. :p

I think he is playing at the lower resolutions because of jumping etc. That's why I thought he'd like a new graphics card. I was prepared to spend about 2 grand. Those cases are nice looking. I know he wanted some extra cooling as well.

That sounds good and in the price range I was prepared to spend. Thanks

Trust me you wont regret it, and try opt for the 1gb (memory) one..really nice. Plays everything he could want, and if later on he wants to upgrade then he can just pop in another card via SLI. ((I have a gigabit 9600 and really really nice))

I'd take a HD4850 :D
It will mo3r both those cards. Got mine for R2099

ppl like u ..... parents like u...well damn....

+1. It comes with a Arctic Cooler to.

+100
the 4850 is so worth the extra cash. (make sure you have a decent PSU, 500+)

Oh, about the case. i can really reccomend the CM690.
Ive got one, and it is a dream. Not really a need to buy extra fans, as it comes with 3x120mm fans already.

Please don't get him a 9600 if you're willing to spend R2000 on a graphics card. There are so many better options - 4850 being the number one choice.
