PIN-less banking coming to SA

Idiots.

A fingerprint or retina creates a unique username, NOT a password.
 
I have got no fingerprints anymore.

My investment at Capitec had to be reinvested and to get onto the system my fingerprints were necessary. After at least half an hour their system could not read any of my ten fingerprints and the system was temporarily bypassed by management to do the paperwork. After another half an hour and at least twenty trials to re-enter a new set of fingerprints on a few different readers was abandoned as no reliable prints could be captured.
From now on I have to supply an ID, my card and proof of residence to get on to the system as all my fingerprints are deleted.

The fingerprint reader on my laptop does not work either.

Yeah not a chance in hell I'm using that. I much prefer having crooks put a gun to my head & demand the PIN rather than them helping themselves to a finger with a panga.

My bank is already using voice recognition for phone security though. Seems to work I guess.

Happens with people that do a lot of manual work with their hands.

Yeah, there has to be an intellectual barrier too, not just a bio one.

You're right, my dad used to lose ability to record his fingerprints quite often when working with cement powder. That stuff EATS your skin.

I see this as a valid combo.. Chip, PIan & Biometric.. Not Chip & Biometric. You need the card for offline transacting and doing biometric validation. You don't want to send the biometric upstream to validate as it introduces latency.

As much as biometric is touted as being more secure etc, you leave your finger prints EVERYWHERE and there are databases of them too like the SA Gov/Home Affairs. Then every company doing biometric security implementations also have a copy if they don't interface with gov or a friendly entity who wants to charge an arm or a leg for access.

All in all.. Lots of copies so using it just means card is present, valid, correct/marching finger print is present (might be right person, might not).. Not having PIN = like transacting with chip of card and no PIN
