I've decided to buy the Pioneer VSX-820-K over the Onkyo TX-SR508. The Pioneer is more powerful and offers more features. I also looked at the Yamaha RX-V467 which pretty much matches the Onkyo. These 3 units are priced similarly at under R5k fully imported. Your opinion please...

Being a Pioneer fan you can assume my answer. Pioneer is just amazing.
Please state your reasons. It's advantage Pioneer on the 3 mentioned models.
Nor is Yamaha.

Go for ONKYO...
I bought an onkyo amp in 1997 when not many people heard of the brand
Sure its “only" a 5.1 setup but it still works beautifully
Interestingly the dvd player was a pioneer...but there were not many choices then.
My speakers are Tannoy.....haven't seen these around recently.

At the time pioneer had very good consumer grade dvd players.
Okay it's down to 2 receivers: Onkyo TX-SR508 and the Yamaha RX-V467.
Onkyo TX-SR508
Likes: 7.1 channel
Dislikes: 80 watts per channel
Yamaha RX-V467
Likes: 105 watts per channel
Dislikes: 5.1 Channel (I don't really care that much)
Price is the same, give or take R50.

Right - now that the Pioneer is out the way ... 
I'd more than likely get the Onkyo (though I haven't read full specs).
The power ratings of those aren't as different in real life as one would think, due that actually being 'marketing' power figures. In fact, you may found the Onkyo has more beef due to a larger power supply and more current (they certainly did have larger back in early 2000s)

Discovered AudioHolics this morning and read the Denon AVR-591 review. It hasn't been released yet but I think it's now between it and the Onkyo TX-SR508.

What I like about my old Onkyo TXSR 502E is that when it broke down I took it the their importers service centre in Limbro Park JHB and it was fixed within one day. I always investigate the after sales service first before I buy, even before I choose a brand.
I also liked it when I chose it for the sound quality.Looking at the output of the amp only becomes very convoluted as different suppliers uses different measurements. I short, one cannot really trust the manufactures ratings. You can go to a site called whathifi to see independent ratings. Its a very individual taste and I dont think the one amp is better quality than the other. As long as you enjoy the sound.
The features are great if you actually use them so think carefully before you pay for a high tech feature that is going to gather dust.

I'd agree with the majority on here and stick my initial Onkyo advise.
I've had 2x Yamahas, an Onkyo and 2x Marantz (the most recent receivers), and I do prefer the Onkyo I had. My next receiver would probably be another.

I'm also looking to buy speakers so please post your recommendations. I'm going to be listening to a few tomorrow afternoon. My budget is R5k for front speakers only (for now).

Take a listen to the Monitor Audio Bronze and whatever Sonor Audio have at that price.

heard them off a Cambridge Audio amp and it was phenomenal!
