Listed food manufacturer Pioneer Foods has apologised to the public for its anti-competitive activities.

"Any contravention remains unacceptable and is an offence to the public at large," newly-appointed chairman KK Combi told a teleconference.

"I apologise unequivocally on behalf of Pioneer Foods to the whole of SA for such behaviour," he said

Sorry means very little.

If you really wish to show remorse for stealing from the poor then sell your bread at cost for the same period you ripped them off.
 
The poor that was ripped off. (oh...and I guess the the middle class like me dont eat bread) wont see a cent of that fine that was paid. Goes straight into the goverment coffers never to be seen or heard from again.
 
c'mon OC ... you see the proceeds from these fines every day on our roads in the form of black, luxury german sedans and SUVs frantically flashing their blue lights at you to get the hell out of their way ;)

haha. As i started reading your post I could feel my temper rising. It had a certain pong of "oh dont be so negative...they use it to fix our potholes blah blah blah" crap lol. Glad I read it through before I had a stroke on the spot! hehe
 
I don't get why he was stealing from the poor... not that I agree with collusion.

He didn't use a gun or force people to buy his products...

It is his products and he can charge what he likes...

If we want lower prices we need to increase supply of food...pretty difficult when more and more farmland is becoming unproductive through no market faults but state intervention.

How is increasing the food production going to help when all the big players collude on the prices? They already bleed the farmers as it is.
 
empty words. let them pay bail for everyone that was locked up for stealing a loaf of bread because they were hungry.

Well charging what I want for MY food is not theft...

Yes the big players will collude...the more they collude and raise prices, the more profits there are. The more profits there are the greater incentive for other players to get into the market and compete in order to get a share of the "profit pie".

However when you cannot get a farm to produce food, or you have to worry about the state taking your farm away, why would you bother investing in this sector?
 
Sorry doesn't cut it, how about spending some time in jail. After all it's what every other criminal is expected to do.

What real crime was committed? If you want to sell you car, should you go to jail if you ask too much for it?

That's the whole point - you cannot go buy from anyone else as they've all colluded and fixed the price between them.
They haven't put a gun to your head, but they prevented you from buying from the competitor 'cos between them they don't compete like they rightfully should.
That's why it's illegal & that's why they were fined.
