Our TV is very rarely used these days. We don’t have satellite, and we don’t care about terrestrial. It is now exclusively used as a replacement big screen for the iMac.
Instead of watching broadcast TV we prefer to watch movies, or we also enjoy the excellent new wave of American dramas.
Being a nice upstanding citizen – and a pedant – I only buy original and legal copies. After trying to watch ‘Troy’ with Thai subtitles and out-of-synch dialogue I decided that my rebellious nature would never survive the agony of dubious low-quality ripped movies.
So I buy movies. I refuse to admit in a public forum that I use the excellent Xtorrent for anything but open source software. No, we really do buy movies. Well, we did buy movies.
I am now so fed up with that insulting piracy ad at the beginning of movies that I leave the room when I insert a (legal) DVD. What’s the issue? Here are just some of my complaints that I can recall at short notice:
I’ve paid for the DVD, why do I have to watch the anti-piracy ad. Preaching to the converted?
The ad was cool the first time I saw it. It’s not anymore.
It’s been the same ad since just after Edison invented moving pictures.
Why can’t I skip it?
It’s now so tedious, I’d rather watch the pirated version so I can skip the damn ad.
One of my main reasons for giving up on TV is the relentless, untargeted and uninteresting ads. Have I now given up on TV, just to have it replaced by a single, boring and totally irrelevant ad?
If I bought this DVD, why are they telling me not to steal it? And how long before they put the same ad at the beginning of each track on my (legal) music CD?
Now here is a copyright ad I do like.
