Johannesburg - The investigating officer in the Oscar Pistorius murder case has seven charges of attempted murder against him, the police confirmed on Thursday.

"Yes. It is one case with seven charges of attempted murder," said Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila.

He said detective Hilton Botha was first charged back in 2009 but the charges were then provisionally withdrawn. The matter was then referred to the director of public prosecutions (DPP).

"It was only yesterday [Wednesday] that we were informed by the DPP that he is being charged," he said.

Malila said Botha allegedly fired shots at a minibus as he tried to stop it. The minibus had seven occupants in it.

Botha is the investigating officer in the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, who was allegedly killed by Pistorius on Valentine's Day.

He has already testified in Pistorius's bail hearing.

I know many of you dont like news24 ... but this was actually uncovered by 702/ewn

It sounds strange that they reinstate the charges now. Is it because he is the investigating officer in the Oscar Pistorius murder case?

Very, though I don't understand the logic of assigning a high-profile case to a cop that is himself in trouble with using a gun without predujice.

We don't know the first thing about the attempted murder case against Botha.

What if it was a hijacking and the seven hijackers were travelling in the minibus?? And the law states they had to charge him, as a formality?

You know, hunting packages for indigenous African wildlife, might include certain empty(driver only) minibus taxis.......?

I surmise that money talks, and OP's defence is seeking to discredit the guy as much as is possible. The same way that they said they are going to sue the girl who accused him of assault.

Tu quoque (pron.: /tuːˈkwoʊkwiː/),[1] (Latin for "you, too" or "you, also") or the appeal to hypocrisy, is a logical fallacy that attempts to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position; it attempts to show that a criticism or objection applies equally to the person making it. This dismisses someone's point of view based on criticism of the person's inconsistency, and not the position presented,[2] whereas a person's inconsistency should not discredit their position. Thus, it is a form of the ad hominem argument.[3] To clarify, although the person being attacked might indeed be acting inconsistently or hypocritically, this does not invalidate their argument.

Every criminal that gets shot at and has a defense attorney worth any salt will lay counter charges such as attempted murder. So this is no big deal IMO.
