Pixel Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) aims to deliver a new range of screens that, according to the company, will revolutionise the portable display industry as we know it.

Pixel Qi was founded by Mary Lou, the previous CTO of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), the non-profit organisation that was formed to bring rugged, low cost devices to children in developing countries.
The new screens from Pixel Qi are building on the progress made in the OLPC initiative which already boasts the success of creating displays that are 1/3 the cost and use 1/10 of the power of traditional LCD panels. These screens are also readable in bright sunlight.

The first batch of the new Pixel Qi screens will be available soon. These screens target the e-book reader and mini-laptop markets. Mainstream laptop screens will follow shortly and we are likely to see devices sporting these new low power screens in early 2010.

Pixel Qi claim that the new screens use ¼ of the power of a regular LCD, and when properly integrated into the device, they can increase battery life by 5-fold. Due to the technology behind the screen, device integration means that all other components (CPU, motherboard, RAM) can be powered down leaving only the display running and consuming power. This isn’t hypothetical, as it has already been implemented in the OLPC device.

The power saving abilities of the Pixel Qi screens will likely affect other display-oriented segments of the market.

The company is working to develop HDTV panels that will not consume hundreds of watts of power, as well as prove cheap to manufacture, making them a viable device for lower income brackets in parts of the world that do not have a steady supply of power and rely on generators. Africa is an ideal market for devices of this nature.

A small number of the first batch of Pixel Qi screens will be made available for DIY enthusiasts who wish to play with the new technology. Be sure to keep an eye on the website for updates on when one can get a sample.
