Does anybody know of a place in Gauteng to study Computer Forensics/Digital Forensics/CCE, or an accredited online place to study. This wil be done part time or thru distant learning if possible. Any info will be appreciated.

The Liverpool of University offer entirely online courses but only from Masters level, they have a section for Computer Forensics... that is the only one I know of

A good place to start if you're looking at following IS forensics as a carreer is to write the CISA & CISM exams (Certified Information Systems Auditor / Security Manager) through ISACA

CISA

CISM

These are internationally recognised standards and you study in your own time

Obviously from there you'll have to get some experience, but with the 2 certifications in your pocket, you're pretty likely to get a start at one of the big 4 audit firms

Hope this helps

@McSack - The CISA/CISM looks like something good to get, but I see what you mean by getting experience: 5 years. I'm currently in programming (last 8 months), and was in IT Engineering the previous 3 years. At least I can use my BSc. I.T. degree for some of the experience.

Approach the Big 4, they have training contracts, although you might have to take a pay cut to get into one of them. Otherwise maybe they will take you on as an experienced hire. Check with them.

There are some institutions that do offer Cyber Forensics training. I have attended some of the training and the courses are pretty good. They are however not certification courses but cover various aspects of cyber forensics.

I am in the process of establishing a forensics lab and will be offering training.

I checked them out for that, its about R8000 per month! For like 3 years. U might aswell fly there and do it then.!

Im doing a post graduate dip in Computer Forensics through UCT at the moment. It is the first of its kind in SA. well worth it aswell.

Hope that answers your question.:)

Hi

Howzit guys,
I have read up on the computer Forensics course offered by UCT and it sounds excellent, something i would really be interested in doing.
I don't have a degree though but i have worked a few years in IT.
I have ususal international MCSE and MCTS, i have written security plus and
I am going to write the CISSP exam this year,
Can i apply to do the Computer Forensics Diploma or is there another course i can do to help me get admission.

Thanks

They accept people who seem to fit your description, from the site:

- Candidates who do not possess a tertiary qualification in IT, but who have significant practical experience in the field (5 years plus) and wish to formalise their knowledge.
-Someone who holds a technikon diploma in information systems or computer science or UNISA Diploma in Datametrics, has at least two or three years relevant IT experience and wishes to progress to more advanced study.

This is the first year that they're running it so you should be well off if you get in for the second year.

Thanks alot, i am going to give it a bash and see what happens.

Hopefully i will get accepted but whether there are jobs for that afterwards is left to be seen, i just think its a really interesting field.

I've also been looking at doing a forensics course/exam - for starters the cisa/cism is a good cert cert to look at. The cissp is another one which is definately worth it. Its a real fun exam and tests you on a wide range of areas within the security field.
