I love macs.
I loved my macbook pro (though it cooked my lap regularly, man that machine radiated.)
I love my new (much cooler) macbook.
I love its ergonomics, design.
I love sleep / wakeup in 2 seconds, shutdown and boot in 20s
I love 8+ hours of battery life
I love the super excellent display and quality all round
Ok, with all that endorsement, why this thread? Well, if you like me have been surprised by all this excellence regularly grinding to a grinding halt, completely locking up and unresponsive, about every 15 minutes, forcing you to power cycle the system, like me you were probably to return the macbook to the store.
Thankfully I found the reason behind this unexpected behaviour and managed to work around it. Spotlight was drunk with power and gobbled memory like crazy on my system, probably trying to index all the thousands of new files I installed with fink. Eventually it brought my entire system down (memory leak!)
The solution was to simply exclude the new directories from spotlight's greedy paws, resulting in a stable and excellence-oozing system. A system update probably is also a good idea, not sure whether this bug has been fixed, but I did not feel like downloading a Gb of updates at the time.
Trying to get the word out via the apple store I bought the mac from in Cape Town was interesting, their web-site email bounced, their main number was not reachable, so I ended up faxing them (!) the problem and work-around. No response yet, so I hope they got it.
Anyways, there you go. Step back from the window, breathe, put spotlight in its place and start enjoying and savoring all the good reasons you bought the mac in the first place
Ciao.
