g'day peeps of MyBB

my little one is now 2.5 years old... and absolutely plane, train and cars crazy. I wanted to take him on a Friends of the Rail trip to Cullinan on sunday, but that is fully booked for father's day :(

i'm thinking of taking him somewhere to watch planes over the weekend. Does OR Tambo / Lanseria still have viewing decks ? or alternatively, is there somewhere else i can take him ? obviously not somewhere outside (noise for his ears).

Maybe Wonderboom airport ?

TIA

Lanseria has the restaurant that overlooks the runway, its pretty cool but its outside... is sound that much of an issue ?

ORT should have a similar thing but I have never seen it.

Swartkops Air Museum - free entry and lots to see - including some exhibits that you can climb into. Be sure to go through all of the hangars and building areas (some are not marked clearly and are hidden away).

rand airport , go to the Harvard club , nice restaurant on the apron of the runway, best viewing deck! , can watch the traffic , and they have the 2 Boeing parked there as well

Grand Central also has a Harvard Café, also right up against the runway, almost as nice as Rand's and possibly a good deal closer.

ORT has a kuk viewing deck, I've never been to rand so I don't know the traffic too well but lanseria is quite nice

Thanks a lot guys...

I think i'll start with Rand Airport .... from their site, and i quote : "Restaurant and bar on the flightline with live music on weekends." ;)

Be sure to order one of their wood fired pizza's. Might have changed since I'd been there though.

The main viewing deck at ORT isn't that bad. It's the one at the international pier that you have to avoid. Which is a shame as you get to see the larger aircraft. It is used as a general lunch break area by the airport workers. Don't be surprised if you smell chakalaka, pap and wors. Security guards also nap there.

Also, don't touch the windows.

Good call. Love it there :)

Swartkops is a nice day trip, also the Air force museum next to Joberg Zoo.
(Unless they've replaced the planes with the ANC's freedom fighter memorabilia)

Lol imagine what that would be, a bunch of blinged up merc and SUV's

So if the kid likes cars he should still be happy :D

Plan B, the missus wants to go Fathers Day shopping, so i'll drop her of at Centurion Mall and quickly shoot through to Grand Central Airport. Looks like they've got a nice little play area as well.

Go to Waterkloof Airforce Base. Just tell the guards that your name is Gupta, and they'll let you in.

I can't remember which airport it was, but the toilets were overlooking the runway. It was positioned so well that while you're having a dump you can pretend the airplanes are taking off from your ass. :)
