I've recently had an ADSL line installed and purchased a Planet ADE 3100 ethernet router modem. I'm struggling to get it to connect. I installed the modem and entered the basic details without any success. I'm running XP. My networking knowledege is poor so I'm hoping that somebody can help me set it up. I've looked at most of the settings on the modem and most look OK. I ran the diagnostics test and it failed on the oam atm loop back segment if that means anything.

I tried PPPoE only - that was the default.
VPI 8
VCI 35
I'm using those settings. Telkom is my ISP - I tried their helpdesk which wasn't too helpfull. Is there info that I need from them other than the username?

You also need the login password and the two DNS IP's.

196.25.1.11
196.43.1.11

Ok, I did not enter any IP addresses. Do I add those IP's within the modem interface?

Your own IP you get dynamically from Telkom when you connect but there should be an entry for the Primary and Secondary DNS on the web config page of the modem.

I will be on here tonight as well ... do you have dialup to get on the net ... if you need help will gladly assist ???.

Is the Planet 3100A or 3100B ???.

Also did the Telkom techie test the line with his own laptop and modem ???.
A bit worried about that oam atm loopback test failure.

I'll have to get back to you tomorrow but I think it's the 3100A. No dialup. Yes it's a possibility that the line was not tested - I was not there during the installation.

Well after much struggling I decided to find someone else with an adsl line which I did and then test everything on his line which worked immediately. So the line was not working from the start - Telkom are supposed to check that the line is working once it's installed?! So my advice to new users is... make sure the incompetent Telkom technicians test the line before your eyes.

Yep ... always be present during the installation.
