What does it mean when Telkom say you're in a planned fibre area? Is there anywhere one could find out if this planned horizon is, a few months, years, decades, centuries, millennia?

Very irritating as I don't know if I should order ADSL in the meantime of wait.

I'm in a planned area... for about a year now, and zero progress
My parents are in an area with nothing showing on the coverage maps, the fibre installation is 99% complete...

I've been in a planned area for 18 months now.. it just means you'll get it at some point..

The best you can do is try spot any technicians in the area installing it, and chat with them what their progress is. Calling Telkom directly won't get you anywhere.

Well that sucks.
I got excited when I saw contractors pulling in fibre down the street only to find it was a DFA link to the local church - like two houses away from me. /Sigh

Why don't you get ADLS in the interim with your own modem\router (that has a WAN port so you can still use it when Fibre kicks in) if you use your own modem it will not be a contract but rather a month to month package.

It seems to be pure luck at this point. I've done 3 Telkom installations to date:

1. The map indicated planning for about a week and I ordered thereafter. Installation took 9 weeks to complete due to an issue on Telkom's side where my property appeared as sub-divided and one ERF was provisioned but the other wasn't... WTF

2. New flat I moved into wasn't indicated on the map at all but already had Telkom fibre when I moved in. It has since appeared on the map.

3. Friend's flat was on the Telkom map as planning for over a year, despite the backhaul already being installed in the apartment block. Apparently this was due to Body Corporate issues.

I live close to a planned area (marked on the coverage map around 6/8 months ago). Yesterday I saw Openserve laying trunking. Problem is that the planned area ends a block before my house, so I doubt I'll get fibre anytime soon. FML. lol.

Our street went into a "planned" state in October 2016. The actual digging and trenching in our street (OpenServe) started in earnest about 6 months later in March 2017. They've already brought overhead fibre cables into the yard, but no splicing yet (which I'm told is the tell-tale sign that the actual go-live is close). Despite nagging ISPs and TELKOM for more info, it's impossible to get any firm update.
